Regarding the offensive line run blocking, I believe that they are doing well. The problem is not the blocking, but the schemes and style of play. We are a passing team that attempts to run to keep our opponents honest. The problem with this plan is that our opponents do not fear being gashed by the run, unless the runner is Drake Maye - who is both crafty and deceptive. There are no misdirection plays, end and around or shuffle plays that help our backs eat up yards and cause concerns for opposing defenses.
The majority of our backs are young, inexperienced and or unhealthy on a regular basis. Our backs are too inexperienced to attempt anything other than straight forward power running plays that the opposing defense are fully aware of their running paths. Watch the games closely. When one of our back line up to the left or right, that's where we will run (everyone knows this, so the threat is minimal). With more experience and better schemes, once all of the previous elements of misdirections, end around, two backs with play action, then our offense becomes unstoppable and a total nightmare for everyone.
Lastly, when the defense reaches the average to above average status on a regular basis, the Tarheels will be a permanent fixture in the top five of the NCAA. Providing that the offense maintains the dangerous passing history that we have maintained for a long while, we have proven that we can score on anyone. Our defensive line and line backers are vastly improved. Our defensive backs and safeties need to improve to close the defensive gaps. We are building a solid program for the future that can compete with the SEC, Big Ten and other Power Five powerhouses. The recruiting trends are also planting great seeds for future winners.
