Hey guys, I'm thinking ahead here and need some help. I'm going to be in Haiti the weekend of the NCAA Regional games (3/23-26). I will have access to good internet the entire time. Those games will be carried on TBS and CBS, does anyone have any experience or info on how I can stream those outside of the US ? I know I ran into issues one time trying to use WatchESPN and got an error about it not working outside the US. THANKS

You gonna go down there and piss all over the womens toilets like you do here in the states? And no, I don't have a clue about the topic of this thread!

LOL ... no, they dont care what restroom you use down there, assuming you can find one.

And for the record, I'm not necessarily pissing on "womens toilets" ... who's to say anymore?!?

I'm also interested in this info. I'm going to be in London during the Final Four games, and in Paris during the championship game. If the Heels have gotten bounced by then - no big deal I don't need to watch the games - but if they're playing in those games I'll want to watch. I sort of assumed that I'd be able to somehow get CBS, either streamed or on regular TV over there - but I guess I shouldn't be so certain of that.

You can probably watch it with an alumni club while you are there.

you're right @JuleZ '02 HEEL but ONLY in the USA. i guess i need some type of IP workaround or whatever. i just have no experience with that. hoping someone else. i'm happy to pay a fee for the access, if necessary.
Oh, I gotcha.

My buddy managed to watch tourney games on his phone when we were in Italy during the tournament way back in '09, I'll ask him how.

Why would you not be able to go to that web address anywhere in the world?

Not a bad idea. I just don't know where they'd host it. I think they usually do it in bars and places like that. If the championship game tips at 9pm ET, and Paris is 6 hours ahead, that'd be a 3am tip there, and I'd imagine the bars would be closed by then, or at least by the time the game ended. I'll look into it though.

Use an internet proxy with an IP address in the U.S.

How do you do that?

Not a TV app, but could you download the CBSSports app and WatchTBS app on your smartphone and go that route? Or, is that USA only as well?

If you are able to, you can also leave your home computer turned on -- download a remote desktop app (TeamViewer, for example), and remote into that computer to stream it -- since the home computer would be in the USA, you should be able to do it quickly and easily. And if you have a strong internet connection / speed, there would not be any lag time.

that's an interesting and potentially doable idea. i'll look into that. thanks!

I actually love this idea, but I'd be surprised if it worked. Usually ESPN and those folks think about that stuff ahead of time and have it blocked.

TeamViewer is really useful.

this is the idea i'm most interested in. how do you accomplish that?
Here's a primer on internet proxies. In layman's terms, it just means that instead of connecting directly to whatever URL you want, you're going to go through an intermediary server that's often housed in another country. This is a good way to get around blocked sites, or hide your real IP address from message board moderators. Ha!

There are free proxies and some you pay for. A quick Google search will show you what's available. I've only used free ones -- and just briefly -- but usually noticed a degradation in speed. You might want to pay for one to ensure safety and speed, then just cancel the subscription after the tournament is over.

Not sure which ones are reputable. I'm hardly an expert on this subject. Anybody else able to add or clarify? Maybe @UNC '92?

So if I have my work laptop with me, using wifi in a London/Paris hotel, but connect to my American based company's VPN, I should be able to stream from the URL above?

All things being equal, yes.

Are you able to access any site with your work laptop? I ask that because my ex works for Bank of America, and even when she was at home connecting her work laptop through our personal ISP (i.e. not her employer's VPN) certain sites were still blocked. Contrast that with my employer, where certain sites are blocked when I'm connected at work or using their VPN at home, but when I'm connected through my home ISP I can use their laptop to access any site. Well, not *any* site because I'd prefer to not lose my job.

What I would do is do a little research and find a reputable proxy/VPN service before you head overseas. Try connecting while you're here and getting everything configured. Then it should just be a matter of accessing that proxy/VPN when you're abroad.

Thanks. I'm able to access most sites on my work laptop (all the usuals that places sometimes block: facebook, espn, etc are all fine), although some are blocked.

I looked into it a little bit and found a VPN service that offers a free 7 day trial, if they make the final four - I'll sign up for the free trial before I leave. I figure (hope) that between the work VPN, masked VPN service, and the hotels having CBS as part of their cable package (will look into this) - that I'll be ok.

in my research i've read that VPN's tend to stream MUCH slower than using the proxy/IP option.

@Raising Heel .... closing the loop on this. Is this the sort of thing you had in mind? They're the top rated site and it looks like I could pay $11 for the month, then cancel it. Thoughts?
