Props to that (except that Marcus wasn't our PG last season, but still...). Hits key points we've discussed on here, including a key one I've tried to stress about the unique qualifications for a Carolina PG:
Without giving it a lot of thought, you might believe this player’s only task is to push tempo, but there’s so much more to it. Carolina point guards have to know when to push tempo, when to let off the gas and run the secondary break, and when to hit the brakes and go into a half-court offense. They have to be able to score a ton of points and also be willing to defer when someone else has the hot hand. They have to know the strengths of all their teammates and be able to get them the ball in positions to succeed.
Carolina’s offense is like a race car at the Indy 500: It’s an engineering marvel with a ton of horsepower that operates at a million miles an hour, but that alone isn’t enough to guarantee a win. UNC still needs a guy in the driver’s seat who can harness all that power and simplify everything to the point that it looks like he’s just repeatedly making left turns. The Heels had a really good driver last season in Marcus Paige (oops), and it seems like they have an even better one now in Joel Berry.
Add to that, knowing when and where to "take", and that there are some places you just don't go with the ball and that you never turn your back on the defense. There is obviously a learning curve but much of it is dependent on instinct ---- and you can't teach instinct.
Good write up but not many really are even mentioning(unless I missed it) the fact that pinson is out.
We hear that dook has their guys out and how good they'll be etc and that U.K. Will only get better, but I think many are underestimating what he will mean to us if/when he comes back. I feel like they have another level to jump to.
Decent article. It really is disappointing that Theo had his injury because his leadership, enthusiasm and talent (especially on the defensive side) really would make this years team exponentially better. His presence on the court opens up a ton of options and combinations and lengthens the bench significantly ! Really hope he makes it back soon and is not hobbled by his injury. Love me some Theo .. he is the essence of UNC basketball !!
