Ross Martin is one the those anti-UNC media folk that some of have talked about over the years.
He won't be missed.đź‘Ž

I don't think Ross Martin hates UNC or anything close to that. Martin is a 'gotcha' journalist. His focus is on somebody being gotten in some way. So writing about UNC means he is always trying to suggest something bad of failed tied to UNC sports. Above he is playing 'gotcha' with Matt Doherty, who then sets the record straight.

Since when did the NCAA limit how many "OFFERS" a program could make to recruits? Yes, they limited how many scholarship players you could bring in but they didn't limit offers?

The 5/8 rule had absolutely nothing to do with why Matt Doherty asked Chris Paul to walk-on.

Class of 2002 was Felton, McCants, May, Noel, Sanders, Grant. Noel walked-on as a freshman to get us under the 5 in one year rule. In 2003 Reyshawn Terry was our only scholarship recruit. That's 7 players between the 2002 and 2003 classes. We could have taken 1 more in 2003 (Chris Paul) and still been cool under the 5/8 rule.

As per usual, when Matt Doherty opens his mouth expect either a lie or something dumb to come out.

I'm perfectly happy not getting Paul bc we won a championship without him.

I don't real how long it lasted, but Doherty is correct.

I already explained in detail how there was room for Chris Paul in UNC's 2003 class.

The only thing he was correct about is that the 5/8 rule was in place at the point in time. But it did not prevent UNC from offering Chris Paul a scholarship and it did not prevent UNC from taking Paul or anyone else in the 2003 class.

Jesse Holley was a Freshman with Terry but Holley was on football scholarship. Justin Bohlander was frosh the same year, but he may have been walk-on. While only 7 of the total may have held basketball scholarships, the UNC team in 2003-04 had 9 players who were either Frosh or Soph. Those general numbers will be in Doherty's mind, long worth the act he emphasized about having Felton. Paul and Felton plying together? Talk about potential cat fight over who is THE LEADER. Doherty was correct in not giving Paul a committable offer.

You are worse than Ross Martin in attributing crap.

You have Raymond Felton during a time that even good players stayed 2 and 3 years, and we won a natty. Chris Paul NC native was not going to wait to play. I will say his style was built for UNC, especially at that time.

I like him. I see him at the coffee shop in uptown charlotte next to my office all the team. Seems to be at peace with the next chapter in his life, not sure what the point of bringing up something from 20 years ago was when UNC ended up winning a natty in CP3’s last season of college

Ross Martin just left IC. He did us a BIG favor by leaving.

Doh basically got strong armed into taking a job he wasnt ready for. Had a depleted roster by year 2 because Gut didnt recruit, brought in arguably our best recruiting class ever and got fired before he could really even coach them. Then Roy came in and won a title with the roster Doh put together outside of Marvin Williams. Not one time have i heard of Doh pointing fingers or being bitter and try to take credit for that 2005 ship. Not sure why he gets so much hate when he has always been nothing but graceful. Hes a better man than me still supporting the program that basically disowned him

Then you've never talked to any of the players he coached at UNC about the awful things he did to them, or seen the non-basketball crap he has spewed on social media.

Even now he's lying about the 5/8 rule to try and cover his tracks about Chris Paul. There was absolutely no reason to lie about that. Just say "we had Raymond" and move on. But he can't help himself.

There is a reason he hasn't been able to keep a job in ANY field for the past 20 years.

He sounded bitter in his book about the situation. Not the championship.

That said, I think Roy's first championship was Doherty's and Doherty's first seasons were Guthridge's. Doherty got us a ship.

Who cares? We won a national championship while he was at Wake. He wasn’t going to play many minutes here with Felton a year ahead of him. And there is some validity to the 5/8 rule in regards to taking a point guard in back to back classes and it being 2 of your 8 scholarships. I never lost any sleep over missing out on a guy who punched a guy in the nuts and got suspended causing his team to lose the ACC tournament opener and then flame out in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament. Wake didn’t win anything in his 2 years.

The players were all going to leave if Doherty stayed, that was clear. 2005 NC would never have happened with Doherty so he can’t get credit. Kudos to him for recruiting those guys though, that’s his part in that equation.

Had matt stayed and Roy not come in when he did, do you realize what was going to happen?

Sean May was set to transfer to play for Bobby Knight at TT.

Rashad McCants was going to play pro ball even if it was across the pond.

Jackie was all set to transfer to Florida.

Ray was going to leave if he could get a spot anywhere in the draft.

Jawad was set to transfer to OSU.

Marvin, we would have had zero chance at him coming to UNC.

These are not things that may have happened, these are things that were already in process and it was not a secret. Roy had to recruit every one of these players to come back and then went out and got Marvin. To in any way suggest that even the smallest amount of credit goes to Matt for Roy's natty is just wrong. I am not sharing rumors, giving you just what was happening at the time. There was a lot more going on during that last season of Matt and folks it was bad, if you think what we are going thru now is bad you have to understand it was many times worse back then. There were things going on then that I am just not going to talk about. Bottom line is the only person that I lay blame to for the Matt situation is Dick Baddour, Matt should have NEVER been hired, doing so was a complete disaster that almost destroyed this program and it almost destroyed Matt. I am glad to see Matt seems to be in a good place now, I am truely glad to see that, I take zero joy in saying something that does not reflect good on him, I am sorry he had to go thru what he did but the fact that it was self inflicted can not be erased.

Yes, I know some were gone if he stayed. I don't know if it was everything you said. I know McCants and Felton were likely gone if he stayed.

In his book he tosses shade at Dean Smith in a couple of instances, while also saying how much he loved him also. Doherty comes off as kinda blaming others.

I can't remember the situation exactly and I can't find any info on it; but David Noel was recruited as a football WR and was supposed to be a football first commit who also wanted to play BB. There was some problem with schollies and some primary sport rule that caused him to choose BB over football instead of both. It's neither here nor there, but it kills me to not quite remember the details of things. Any help?
