CHAPEL HILL – One day after scoring 30 points and pulling down 15 rebounds in Carolina’s 88-72 win at No. 1-ranked Duke, senior forward Luke Maye was named to Google Cloud’s Academic All-District 8 team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Maye is a business administration major in the nationally-renowned Kenan-Flagler School of Business. The Huntersville, N.C., native earned second-team Academic All-America honors as a junior.
Last night, he became the second Tar Heel to score 30 or more points and grab 15 or more rebounds in the 249-game history of the UNC-Duke basketball rivalry.
He became the first Tar Heel ever to score 30 points in his career at both NC State and Duke (he had a career-high 33 in Raleigh a year ago).
He also became just the second player in college basketball history to have a 30-point/15-rebound game against the AP’s No. 1-ranked team. Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes of Houston accomplished that (39 points, 15 rebounds) against Lew Alcindor’s UCLA in 1968 in the matchup billed as “The Game of the Century.”
Maye has scored 1,249 points and has 821 rebounds in his Carolina career. He was the MVP of the 2017 NCAA South Regional, was first-team All-ACC in 2018 and was the ACC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball a year ago.
All first-team all-district honorees advance to the national ballot for All-America honors, which will be announced next month.
