Here are some little nuggets from Monday's session at the ACC Kickoff at Pinehurst Country Club. UNC players Jeff Schoettmer and Marquise Williams represented the Tar Heels on Monday. On Tuesday, coach Larry Fedora will meet with the media.
*Marquise Williams' first encounter with Gene Chizik wasn't this past winter after Chizik was hired to coach the Tar Heels' defense, it came several years earlier.
"I've known coach Chizik for a long time," Williams said. "He recruited me when he was at Auburn. When he brings the energy to those guys on defense it's like no other. The guy's been doing a heck of a job. He makes guys love football, and those guys on the defensive side they love football. They love being around each other, they love competing, they love practice, and they love everything that they do."
Williams was then asked about being recruited by Chizik.
"He was a winning coach." he replied. "That was the year they won the national championship and I was excited, you know. To have a coach that's won a national championship wants you as one of his players, it's the best feeling ever."
*Schoettmer was asked about why the Tar Heels played so well in winning big at Duke and then 9 days later so poorly in being obliterated at home by NC State. He gave an interesting response:
"We were trying to figure that out ourselves. I think we were too high coming off the Duke win and, I don't want to say we didn't take NC State seriously, but when I saw at the Duke game, the opening kickoff our team was jumping up and down getting hyped. The NC State game, I look across the sideline and I see them jumping up and down and our team was just flat. I don't know exactly what it was I saw at that moment they came ready to play."
*There have been several in-depth reports out in the last year or two about dwindling attendance at college football games by students. The reports have cited high definition televisions, easy access to alcohol and other refreshments, and even early start times in some cases as reasons why students aren't going to games as much as they used to.
Williams was asked about this Monday, and his response was rather interesting, so much so that it caught Schoettmer's attention, and he chimed in with his two cents, too.
Williams says he asks some friends if they were at a specific game and many say they weren't. Why?
"They wanted to drink," he said. Williams joked that many college kids want to sit on their couches and drink during games because they can't at the games.
Schoettmer, who was several feel to Williams' right, turned at one point and asked, "What is he talking about," because Williams had the media around him laughing. The senior linebacker was then filled in. He offered a simple solution:
"More girls," he said.
Schoettmer says if more girls go to games more guys will go to games, even if beer isn't made available at the games.
