There will be an interesting dynamic at Arlington (Va.) Bishop O'Connell this year as the school has rising senior prospects committed to UNC (Jay Jay McCargo), Duke (Myles Hudzick) and Virginia (Landon Word).
Frankly, UNC's got the best of that bunch.
Bishop O'Connell produces a good amount of talent and it's always good to keep it open for the future with commitments in the now. And it's just the latest school in Virginia, part of an increasing number, that aren't sending kids in a pipeline to mostly UVA or VT. That's a trend that could make Virginia more like North Carolina in some respects -- they're already fairly similar in that.
As for McCargo, on a scouting note, from what you can see on film one of his best assets is that powerful and explosive first and second step. Those are all-important for an offensive lineman and he's so nimble and quick. He's going to be outstanding in helping UNC deal with some of the quicker edge rushers they will face. He could probably play tackle or guard. It's been a constant refrain that he needs to get stronger, but I don't put a lot of stock into that in my own eval because you're talking about someone that will be molded for three years (preferably) in a college weight program by professionals and I think that will come. Given UNC's system better to have the athletic technician that's light on his feet, and just worry about getting him stronger.
Four of the top 20 (and five top 38's) from Virginia are already committed to Tobacco Road schools. And the N.C. schools are in play for a lot more of them.
