Schedule Notes:

• Carolina and Georgia will face off for the first time in more than 40 years when the teams meet to open the 2016 season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sept. 3. Kickoff time has not yet been set. This will mark the second appearance for UNC in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game – college football’s longest-running current neutral-site game series. The Tar Heels last opened their season in Atlanta against LSU in 2010.

• UNC’s six-game home schedule includes James Madison on Sept. 17, Pittsburgh on Sept. 24, Virginia Tech on Oct. 8, Georgia Tech on Nov. 5, The Citadel on Nov. 19 and NC State on Nov. 25.

• In the month of October, three of UNC’s four games are on the road (at Florida State on Oct. 1, at Miami on Oct. 15 and at Virginia on Oct. 22). The only home game in October is against Virginia Tech on the 8th.

• For the second straight time in Durham, the UNC-Duke game will be played on a Thursday night (Nov. 10). Two years ago at Wallace Wade Stadium, Carolina beat the Blue Devils, 45-20, on Thursday.

2016 Schedule

Sept. 3 vs. Georgia (Atlanta): Georgia and North Carolina have met 30 times since 1895, the last contest a 7-3 Georgia victory in 1971. Overall, the Bulldogs hold a 16-12-2 advantage over the Tar Heels. This will be the first game for new Bulldog head coach Kirby Smart.

Sept. 10 at Illinois: Carolina and Illinois are meeting for the fourth time overall and first time in Champaign since 1971. The Tar Heels are 3-0 against the Illini with a 34-14 win in Chapel Hill in 1987, a 27-0 win at Illinois in 1971 and last year’s 48-14 win in Kenan Stadium.

Sept. 17 vs. James Madison: Carolina is 2-0 against JMU, winning at home in 2007 and 2011. Former UNC coach Everett Withers directed the Dukes to back-to-back 9-win seasons in 2014 and 2015 before accepting the head coaching job at Texas State.

Sept. 24 vs. Pitt: Carolina is 7-3 overall against the Panthers and has won three in a row in the series, including last year’s 26-19 win at Heinz Field. UNC is 4-0 at Kenan Stadium against Pitt.

Oct. 1 at Florida State: This is Carolina’s first game against the Seminoles since a memorable 37-35 win in Tallahassee in 2010. That was UNC’s only win in Tallahassee in 10 attempts.

Oct. 8 vs. Virginia Tech: Larry Fedora earned his first career ACC win against the Hokies with a 48-34 win in 2012. Last season, Carolina clinched the ACC Coastal Division championship with a dramatic 30-27 overtime win against Virginia Tech.

Oct. 15 at Miami: Carolina is 10-9 all-time against the Hurricanes, including last year’s 59-21 win at Kenan Stadium. After serving 15 years at Georgia, Mark Richt is in his first season as head coach at Miami.

Oct. 22 at Virginia: Larry Fedora is 6-0 against Virginia, including four wins at UNC and two wins while coaching Southern Miss. Virginia is led by first-year coach Bronco Mendenhall.

Oct. 29 – OPEN

Nov. 5 vs. Georgia Tech: Carolina looks to continue its two-game win streak over the Yellow Jackets after wins in 2014 (48-43 in Chapel Hill) and 2015 (38-31 in Atlanta). Since 2008, Carolina is 1-3 when it had a week off prior to the Georgia Tech game.

Nov. 10 at Duke: Carolina has won 23 of the last 26 contests against the Blue Devils.

Nov. 19 vs. The Citadel: Carolina has won all four previous games against The Citadel.
