Most Overrated Teams in College Basketball

Well that 2010 team was whacked with multiple season ending injuries that would have taken any team out. MUCH MUCH worse than what duke had last season so holding that against UNC just makes no sense at all. WE set a brand new NCAA record of games missed with injury, not just set it but blew the old record away. But even with all that going against us we went to the final game of the NIT against a field of several that most felt should have been in the NCAA field.

2013 was also a very poor example, we were over ranked going in to be candid but we never had 1 of our key players in PJ and didn't have LMac for about half that season? Yet we did finished tied (with duke) for 3rd in the ACC, ranked #19. It took a white hot Iowa st team to beat us and it took the eventual NCAA champs UConn to take Iowa st out. Problem was we got totally screwed in our NCAA seeding, most expected us to be around a 4-5 seed, they struck us at 8 and 8 is a really hard road, where duke once again got a gift seeding.

Where's dook? Although I do agree that Kentucky is over-rated, the top three have all won championships in the last decade. What a stupid article!

You can come up with a lot of metrics to answer this question. The one he uses - how did you start and finish the season in the polls is a place to start.

Fans need to realize that this isn't really a knock against the team as much as is is a knock against the raters. Clearly their preseason ratings could be better.

It also seems clear that those who are doing those preseason ratings are being overly influenced by "brand name, coaches, or flashy young players."

Exactly. I think there are some people here who didn't read the article. They just scrolled down to #3.

Who cares? When I read over-rated and see UNC, it's a crap article.
Anyone who wants to have context and form an unbiased opinion cares. You're saying it's crap just because you see UNC. That's not why it's crap. It's crap because the methodology isn't very good.

If only he had explained why UNC made the list.

CC

In the article, he says UNC's ranking is based "almost entirely from two seasons" - 2010 and 2013. I don't see how anyone can judge a team's performance over an entire decide on two years. That just proves that his methodology is flawed.

Like I said, most just scrolled down to #3. From the article:

"To come up with this list, I looked at the preseason Top 25 list, and the end-of-season list, and compared them. (If a team was unranked at the beginning of the season, they were assigned a ranking of 38, and if unranked at end of season, assigned a ranking equal to their seed value–or a 50 if missed the tournament)."

I agree with you that the methodology is flawed, but it's based on our performance for every year.

Certain schools are going to be highly ranked every year. Can't win the championship every year. 3 NC titles since Roy came back, and usually deep runs in other years. I'll take that.

With all respect to the original poster, I saw this article and didn't even bother reading.... it's standard pre-season click bait running to a predictable formula:
1. Set up a ranking system
2. Crap on a couple of blue-blood programs with massive fan bases.
3. Watch them all click through, giving your website greater traffic and hence advertising power.

Bingo

Any method used to classify UNC, UK, KU, or Duke as overrated programs it's ridiculous. Like another poster said, it's just click bait for the type of people that will be looking to read this kind of article, i.e. UNC, UK, KU, and Duke fans. If you want to discuss overrated programs, come up with criteria that includes Syracuse, Arizona, Michigan, Maryland, et al.

we ARE overrated alot of years. Ironically it comes from our name and the fact that we ARE the best or one of the best teams every year. Even a super biased UNC fan can admit alot of our preseason rankings are based on name alone. I think we were like preseason number 4 after winning in 09 and losing our top 7 scorers which was laughable. But like someone above said, I'll take being "overrated" with 3 titles in 12 years any day.

You can't be judged overrated when you have the injury bug we have some years nor when your best player never sets foot on the floor. Jmhho

Who cares? Championships speak volume and we have THREE since Roy got here. I'll take being overrated every year if that means a championship every 4 years.
