Just a couple things I've notice. I'd be curious to hear others' input ITT.
Running game isn't as robust which is a result of 2 things. Turner and Williams being gone. Turner loss is obvious, but Williams was always a threat to tuck it and run. He kept LBers and Safeties honest which opened up play action for those huge pass plays. It also aided the RBs and OL on read-option.
This year, Mitch has been a more traditional drop back QB. Combined with a slight decrease in OL we are seeing a couple of new trends unfold.
- First, OL isn't benefiting from the added dimension of the QB run and defenses are selling out on the RB.
- Safeties are playing deeper, not worried about run support and making sure Hollins doesn't get behind them.
- BUT we aren't missing a step because Mitch isn't forcing it down the field. He is fine with the underneath crossing routes, RBs check downs, and out routes to the sidelines. He is foregoing the home run and opting to carve up defenses with the dink and dunk. It's really not dissimilar to what New England does.
Teams will have to pick their poison against this offense and pray for a bad day. Maybe it's my baby blue glasses, but I can only see this offense getting better with more reps.
