Been to a few new places, Hersey’s in Burlington, Fuzzy’s in Madison, The White Swan close to Goldsboro/Kinston. All were good, Hersey’s was probably the best. Anybody tried any new ones?

What a smackdown.

I thought you trailer park trash would want to talk about anything except you know who…

There’s a few decent places here in Asheville but nothing that I’d make a road trip for if I lived out of town.

I’ve found the closer you get to the mountains the harder it is to find good BBQ. The squad complains all the time about people talking about Trump but he is the only subject they know to talk about.

The chain?
yes. Joke. Although for a chain it isn't bad.

As a matter of fact I hadn't been to another BBQ joint in years and I decided to finally try some takeout from Sam's in Raleigh, with great anticipation. Once I tried it, my first and final thought was, 'I should have gone to Smithfields'. Sam's BBQ tasted sort of soapy, not good at all. Cornbread was as weird as advertised. The slaw and beans were good enough to almost make up for the rest of it, but I haven't been tempted to go back so far. I probably will though, if I can convince myself it was just an off night.

Anyway, I'm not in the tournament due to lack of recent experience other than Smithfields and Sam's.

BBQ styles would fit better. BBQ joints are as opinionated as hotdog joints.

Plus there are soany to choose from. Mission BBQ is another great chain.

Are you talking about Sam Jones’ bbq? I agree Smithfield’s has done a good job for fast food bbq. You will never mistake it for the Skylight Inn though…

Do we really want to go through a tournament when know eastern NC is going to win? It would be as pointless as the 2009 NCAA tournament.

if you name a chain you either dont have enough NC BBQ experience or you're a moron 🤪

i've had BBQ in 68 of the 100 counties (and counting). my top 10:

10) Bears Smokehouse / Asheville
9) Stamey's / Greensboro
8) Mission BBQ / Wilmington
7) Sooey's / OBX
6) Parkers / Greenville
5) Sam Jones / Raleigh
4) Camel City / Winston Salem
3) The Smoke Pit / Gastonia
2) Q Shack / Durham
1) Phil's BBQ / Black Mtn (my favorite partly bc of their incredible mustard and Alabama white sauces)

There's more to the sauce than the q really. To many flavor profiles. It could end in Civil War and this board busting up.

If you don't have Wilber's in your top 10, then I can't take you seriously.

ETA: And mustard sauce as your number one? Get the hell out of here.

Bear’s is legit. They just opened a new location downtown that’s like half a mile from me.

Luella’s is another solid choice here.

Buxton Hall here also isn’t bad but it’s overhyped in my opinion.

Mustard sauce is only ever halfway decent on a sammich. Definitely one of the worst sauce styles though.

used to love Wilber's ... had a really bad sandwich there a couple years ago, will never go back.

i actually like the mustard sauce for dipping the hushpuppies, not on the meat. i do like the Alabama white sauce on Phil's chopped brisket.

The only one of those that I would have in my top ten would be Stamey’s
