Yeah, I know, you expecting how i titled this for me to slam the kid, sorry, not happening this time around! LOL

No, I more want this thread to discuss what you see Nate improving on this season! I was really impressed with Nate last season in his new found dedication to the defensive end, that kid worked his lil tail off hawking as best he could, I was PROUD of Nate folks! I have been hard on the kid, not nearly as hard as Roy has been I promise ya bit wanted Nate to work harder as a defender and he absolutely did last season. I was also really happy to see him begin to take and make some floaters later season, he wasn't just a catch and shoot guy, he added more weapons!

But as you know, time stands still for no one, miles to go before I sleep and miles for Nate as well! So what do you want to see Nate improve on this coming season?

I would like Nate to go to the hole a little more often especially since he is one of the better free throw shooters on the squad. More importantly since Nate is now a senior I would like him to be a vocal leader like Paige did by holding players responsible and lighting some fires under teammates butts who don't play Carolina basketball. Between him, Hicks and Meeks, Britt seems the logical choice of the three to be the most vocal. A lot of times intangibles like leadership do not show up on the score sheet but make the difference a winning and losing team...If Britt can average 6-8 points a game I will be satisfied but more importantly if he can lead by example and help the freshmen and sophomore players adapt to college basketball quickly and understand their roles on the team then that is more than any of us can ask for from him...

I know that before last season Butter took an interest in helping Nate (I think because they're both DC Metro area natives) and Nate's improvement in floor spacing sense I'm sure came from that. He also out of necessity stepped up his defensive intensity over previous seasons. I just want to see Nate as a Senior improve his jump shot consistency and be a valuable bench component who can give quality minutes at both Guard positions and help the team when he's in there.

I find it hard to believe any Heels fan would "slam" Nate, Dave. All he's done is be the ultimate team player, comport himself well on and off the court, and play any role he's been asked to play. I fully expect him to do all those things next year.

Will he play an expanded role, possibly starting? It's certainly possible. It's also possible that his minutes could drop slightly. Either way, I'm sure he'll handle it like a man and like the good teammate he is.

There's no doubt that his defense improved last year. TBS, he needs to work even harder on his defense, especially if he's going to be be spending any time at SG, as many believe. He's undersized for that spot and not particularly strong, so he needs to continue to get as strong as he can.

I think his primary role will be backing up Joel at PG so he needs to bring Senior poise to that role and run our offense efficiently. IOW, limit his mistakes, knock down the open three, and be a vocal leader. He's embraced every role Roy's given him and I expect nothing less next year.

Yeah, everything Arch' said.
Nate has been a great Tar Heel and could have a terrific senior year playing with his classmates Meeks and Hicks and that dynamite group of Juniors.

I reckon he plays off the bench in a major glue-guy role for the team, providing leadership for the frosh and soph wings (KW)
Estimating around 20 or so minutes, sharing time at point and off guard.

I also think we'll see more of Nate at point in the early season with Roy saving Joel's legs for the inevitable shortening of the bench in March..... and hopefully April.

Well, I said that about folks maybe being surprised that I was not slamming Nate simply because I have been hard on the kid at times and to some if you critique a player it is akin to slamming the player. I critique players all the time and granted some more than others but to me it is always about their play, not about the kid himself unless there are off court issues. Nate is a great kid, I don't always love his game and when I don't I try to fasirly point out what concerns me.

There are some things with nate he can't do a lot about, he is still going to be a little fella, don't see him becoming a ball handling whiz nor do I see him becoming a knock down jump shooter. But the kid plays within his role, he doesn't take bad shots often, he doesn't try to do things that are not within his skill set or physical ability and I like that. Nate really improved in the area that caused me so much heart burn last season by really working a heck of a lot harder and smarter on the defensive end. No, he isn't going to be on any all ACC defensive teams but he worked much harder to stay with his man last season and rather than being a defensive liability actually became a guy that helped us defensively. That was a HUGE change HUGE!

I want to see him work even harder this season in understanding what we are doing defensively and fight thru those screens, still at times drops under to deep. I want him to really work even harder on his ball handles, improved that last season as well but still a good ways to go in that aspect. He started to show off a floater that I really liked, he really isn't a guy that is going to be able to take it hard to the rack often to draw those fouls but the floater allows him to get close in and still finish over long defenders.

His shooting trailed off last season, maybe that was due to reduced PT and coming in colder off the bench but with the shots he takes, usually cleanish looks, need to drop those at least above 35% so needs to hones than in more.

Personally, Roy showed me last season, he prefers Nate at the 2 much more than at the point, Nate looks more like a PG but he plays more like a 2. Frankly, we may see nate backing up Joel a good bit early on but I strongly suspect that as we get in to the conference slate we will see more 7th backing up Joel and Nate playing more at the 2 spot, starting there unless Kenny or Brob show they can take over the position. Kenny and BRob offer more length at the 2 but still have to show they can shoot at this level and be relied on to drain pressure shots. Nate has the strong experience advantage so we will have to see how all that shakes out.

I agree that Nate appears more comfortable at the SG spot, Dave. But I really question his ability to guard SG's effectively, especially some of the bigger ones. My main reason for thinking he'll be Joel's primary backup is not being sure anyone else is ready at this point to do so. And I also expect Kenny to shoot much better from the perimeter going forward. He's already proven he can defend the SG position effectively.

Now if 7th can emerge as a viable backup at PG, all bets are off. My hope is that 7th will develop into our next great PG after Joel's departure. I know we are trying to bring in 'Spoon next year and that Joel may be leaving after this upcoming season. So I'd love nothing more than to see 7th become heir to the point position.

And I know you've been somewhat critical of Nate in the past, but you don't go overboard and you always give reasons for your opinions. You're one of the more evenhanded posters on this site.

Arch, I absolutely share your concerns about Nate being able to guard 2's being a little as he is. That is why I really want Kenny or one of the frosh to step up and make it so clear that Roy will roll with them. All 3 have good size for 2s and at very least Kenny and 7th will lock on your butt as defenders and I don't think BRob is a poor defender at all and has great length. For Kenny and the 2 frosh, it is a matter IMO of being able to produce on the offensive end within our offense, picking up our system (which IMO puts Kenny out front in that race).

Keep this in mind guys, if things are close Roy will go to the more experienced guy and in our back court that is Nate at the 2. So it is up to kenny and the 2 frosh to make sure it isn't all that close a call and this much I do know, if kenny can consistently knock down catch and shoot jump shots IT WILL NOT BE A CLOSE CALL...

I'd love nothing more for next year's team than to see this happen.
