Need help solving a disagreement with my son. Watching an NBA Summer League game today. 5 minutes to go in the game with one team up 26 points. The losing team has the ball and the PG starts a drive from the left 3 point line into the point to the basket. The SG comes across to the top of the key and is wide open. The PG does not pass the ball but instead drives into the paint and gets a lay up around his defender. Pretty easy lay up although somewhat contested. SO here is the question...was that the correct play or should he have passed the ball to his SG for the wide open 3 from the top of the key?

Drive for the layup. It sounds like it was a somewhat easy score, and there's always a potential for a foul, which even if the layup misses, stops the clock the opportunity to put points on the board. When you're down that far, drive in and make something happen instead of jacking up jumpshots. Yeah, the guy was wide open, but if he misses, it's a long rebound and probably an easy score the other way, and you're down 28. Maybe I'm just old school, but I like to chip away at that lead by driving in, making plays and trying to get the other team in foul trouble.

Oh, and you may want to edit the poll. Right now, you have drive to the hoop for a contested 3 as your second answer.
In can see why his son disagrees with him.

And driving to the basket is a proven thing at UNC. Kicking to the open shooter is a dook thing. 2 different styles, by 2 different coaches. The NBA seems to be more kicking it out than fundamental basketball.
