Okay, all you sideline (and past practicing) Coaches out there, please chime in here. I am not a current coach, but think I am have pretty decent understanding form past play and youth coaching days, and value many of your input.
I was fortunate enough to be able to watch several games the last 3-4 days. West Coast to Eastern D1 and D2 tilts.
I know every year the NCAA tinkers with rules and points of emphasis. But it is very obvious that they are really sticking to the less contact rulings and eliminating hand-checks out front. It is way overdue in my humble. The only thing that seemingly creates a mismatch is that they will never call palming the ball off the dribble. Some of these kids' crossovers now are deadly, given they can palm it and walk 2 steps in doing so on their way to the hoop.
Here's my point, so please chime in.
EVERY team I have seen has experienced difficulty in stopping a drive from the point or top sides. It is not just NC. Has anyone else noticed how the lack of allowed hand checking has opened it up for penetration, nationwide? I also believe this will play well in our favor as our defensive system is predicated on dbl team switching, more so than many others out there. Call it old school Defense. But the game had gotten to the point where it was so physical out front that only the best were able to take it to the hole nationwide. I think the new emphasis on this will actually help our guys more than other teams.
I maybe off base here. What are your thoughts?
But for certain, it has been easier for most teams to drive past their defender than in years past. I noticed this on abt game number 4, and watched closely for it the rest of the weekend. Sho nuff! And I know the guards didn't all just get better dribbling wise and worse defensively.
Your thoughts, to this kinda xx's and oo's post. I don;t thing NC's defense out front may be as bad as many suspect.
