In the last decade, teams from North Carolina have competed in the 6 major team sports championships in the United States:
NHL - Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006
CBB - UNC (2009) and Duke (2010 & 2015) have won three NCAA championships
NFL - Carolina Panthers are in the Super Bowl in 2016
Also consider:
*Pinehurst hosted the 2014 U.S. Open
*UNC basketball is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation
*The Olympic Team USA coach is Mike Krzyzewski of Duke
*Raleigh hosted the 2011 NHL All-Star Game
*And taking it a step further, the Panthers played their first season at Clemson's Memorial Stadium, Clemson is closer to Charlotte than UNC, Duke and N.C State are, and Clemson just played for the CFB national title.
*And finally, although these two items just miss falling inside the decade parameter, but Charlotte was awarded the 2017 NBA All-Star Game and UNC won the 2005 NCAA championship
