I have my laptop hooked up to a monitor with built-in speakers via HDMI. Up until recently, the sound would always come through the monitor, but it just suddenly stopped, and it's coming through the laptop speakers instead. I checked the playback devices under sound, and the monitor isn't even an option anymore. Usually, whenever this happens, I just restart the computer, and the sound will go through the monitor again with the monitor showing up on the playback devices. I've tried showing disabled and disconnected devices, but still, it only shows my laptop speakers. I'm at a loss, and I have no idea how to get my sound to go through the monitor again. All of my drivers are updated, so that can't be the cause. It's really starting to piss me off, so if anyone out there has any suggestions or has gone through this before, have at it.

Try a different hdmi cable. They can be finicky sometimes, and they can fail in strange ways.
Yep, go ahead and buy a couple of high-quality HDMI cables and you'll likely save money in the long run.

And the switching to Mac suggestion is sound advice.

I'm sure you've done this already, but try renstalling the drivers for your monitor.

Here us what Santos says.

We appreciate you for trying the troubleshooting steps.

As the issue still persists, I suggest you to set the TV as default device and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps.

1) Type Sound in the search area on the task bar and select Sound.

2) Select the PlayBack tab.

3) Select the device and click on Set Default.

Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.

My problem is that it doesn't even show up on the playback devices. The "show disabled" and "show disconnected" options are both checked. Nothing.

I have, but unsuccessfully. I even tried hooking it up to my TV to see if it was a monitor issue, but it wouldn't work for the TV either. It's weird because all I did was unplug everything to rearrange some furniture, and it hasn't worked since. I'm at a complete loss.

What kind of monitor is it?

Asus MX279
From what you are telling us it's clearly not recognized. This would almost certainly indicate an issue with the device drivers or device itself. So when you say you were unsuccessful installing the drivers, did you mean the reinstall procedure failed or the procedure worked but nothing showed up?

A lot of these files used for these drivers are shared by other devices. It might be possible to uninstall your sound card and your monitor and reinstall both (sound first) and see if it takes care of it. Without being able to access the device that's about all I got for you.

Ok that's good. Disregard my last poast.
I, for one would still like to Know how you fixed it

Basically just went into the device manager again and tried to update a bunch of crap until it worked. I tried to update the obvious ones like the sound card, monitor, etc. before and it didn't fix anything, so I just went in there and started updated every random thing I could see. Don't know which one did the trick though.

Details of how are not important. Cool is an end result kind of guy.

Had my laptop for a little over 4 years now and still runs just as it did right out of the box. No need to replace it with an overpriced POS.

I hear you -- I had a Sony Vaio in highschool that lasted me 8 years. I get it. All I am saying is once you get used to a Mac, you learn that the quality between the two is big. Windows machines are basically like taking a bunch of random parts and slapping them together to make the machine work. Apple...everything just "works."

To each their own.

All kidding and Apple bashing aside (I stand by my statement regarding they are the epitome of overpriced), a Mac doesn't make sense with what I want my computer to do. Most of what I use it for is purely leisure. I have a gaming PC, and it's pretty much the shit. If you want a gaming PC, you gotta have Windows. I do everything else on it just fine. It's all a matter of taking care of it, really. I treat mine like a child, so that's why I don't have many problems. Macs are reliable, not going to say otherwise, but for what I want, a Mac just doesn't make sense for me.

Yea, if you take care of it, a Windows is just fine, and it is much simpler to plug various parts into it (ie: better graphics cards for gaming). It feels virtually impossible to take an Apple apart to swap in better parts.

And I know Apple is crazy expensive and they get away with charging it b/c the "Mac world" is somewhat of a cult that refuses to shop elsewhere. I'm not that bad. I recognize that there are things the Samsung tablet can do that I wish an iPad could, and it's like half the price. The reason I still go with an iPad is because is will sync with literally our entire house. We cut the chord for Apple TV, and I can completely sync two iPads for our kids, my Macbook / iMac, my wife's Macbook, our iPhones...everything just plays together and it's completely problem-free.

Back when I was working with Windows, I would have to run USB chords all over creation to accomplish this and it still would feel like a rig job.

So, I guess I'm in the camp of "overpaying" for the convenience and quality.

Because you have no sense of humor.

I don't own a Mac. I was just goofin with Cool. I'm pretty sure he knew that, based on his response.
Well they are good for tweets and pictures, etc.not so much for real world work.....
