Losing 2 in a row, at the end of a season that had just reached 9 wins and a Coastal division title, made those two losses feel worse than they were. I hate losing to State, but that was a classic rivalry game. The GT game was the usual WTF game. If that had happened in early October, I don't think the fan base would have been quite as disillusioned NOW.

I don't think UNC is ever going to be a perennial title contender like Clemson. It sounds like it's going to take a lot of money to do that going forward (maybe it always did, for all I know). Make the best of what you have and look forward to the opportunity that awaits.

Chirpy Mack always will talk the salesman's game. He knows that losing at the end of the season is always a downer that can cast a huge shadow over Spring and the following season. He also knows how a season ending loss to a nasty rival like NCSU can ruin even a 10 win season. He just prefers to schmooze his way around it rather than man up. Blaming the fans and sportswriters, is something to expect from Mack.

There is no real opportunity going forward for any program that does not take it seriously. There will be schools that have programs that are contenders to make the playoffs at least a couple times per decade and schools that do not. Mack would be happy to to be among the Have Not group so he can ride off into the sunset his way. If fans accept 7-6 and then 6-7b seasons then they will not be bothering Mack with demands for him to change his staff to make the team better - he will get to do what he wants all the time. All major Ram's Club Big money people who are not clearly football-first are the same: they do not want back to back 3-9 teams, but they also are fine with 4 consecutive 7-5 teams followed by a 6-6 team. Mediocre, even low mediocre, is acceptable to them. It fact, it is often perforable because it cause fewer waves.

He didn't blame the fans or the sportswriters at all.

He said, quite specifically, that the players, and coaches, were not good enough to be 11-1, or in the CFP discussion. If they were, they would have won and accomplished that. They're not there yet.

You'd be much better off if you would become a fan of one of the football powerhouse teams. You'd still find things to complain about, I'm sure.

Not on this one thing. But in the past, including in his UNC part 2, Mack has blamed both. Sportswroters overrate his team and that hurts him as coach and the team. And that makes fans demand more than is possible.

That is Mack, and always has been. Mack wants to be adored and praised, not questioned and challenged. If he delivers a decade without a league championship, then that is the best that could be done - and he wants to hear no more about it.

Does Nick Sabin finds things about even his undefeated National Champs that could have been improved? Yes - every year. And that is necessary for him to be the best coach in CFB history. Bear Bryant was the same. So was Knute Rockne. And Frank Leahy and Woody Hayes and Bobby Dodd and Bob Neyland and John McKay and Darryl Royal and Bud Wilkinson, etc. That's how Kirby Smart is.
