He wants QBs who come from stable 2-parent families and have 3.5 or higher GPA, because those things help mold leaders. Wants OL from similar stable backgrounds, but DL may be from single parent home and have lower grades. DL needs to be rough and tumble, not necessarily smart in any sense.

Sure, that's a potential reason, just like a potential reason is that the media is far too busy giving serious coverage to all the nation's much more serious issues to worry about what some coach says.

Because he is black, the media does not quite know how to damn what he said without seeming to be mean to a black guy. That is triply important when that same media is on an all out crusade to have more black HCs.

The main secondary reason I think is that Colorado is not in the South. And Boulder is known as a super Liberal place. If Sanders made those comments while being HC at, say, Auburn, the media would run with the story, the focus being racism in the South, in AL and at Auburn.

Definitely it is all about him. He loves the spotlight. He is an entertainer, a flashy talker. And there is no way to tell how it all will work with him coaching in a top level conference, as opposed to a weak 1AA/FCS conference.
