New 2018 Commit

Weird.

I love when we get a commitment. It's always fun to learn about a kid that seemed to jump at the chance to attend Carolina. And I'm sure he's talented. But he's a combo guard. And not nearly as highly ranked as guys who play his same position and have already committed. Someone made a joke in another thread about banning guys over 6'7" from playing. It looks like Roy believes that. We can't get a Big on campus yet we have guard offers out all over the place in multiple classes and guys pulling the trigger quickly. I don't know what to think.

But I look forward to reading up on White. Apparently he really wanted to be a Heel and I can appreciate that.

I posted some tweets on 2018 recruit thread. He is ranked like #21 by ESPN.

I knew we were eventually going to get a " but we need a big man" post. It was a great pick up. Enjoy the moment and getting bugs will work itself out. White is jumping up the rankings, as heelfan said, espn has him at 21. This was a huge pickup, not just because hes a rising sophmore, but also because we have two highly regarded in state kids committed.

I said before I liked White out of everyone in the 2018...A lot of people didn't know about him because the HS he played at and who he played AAU ball for last year. But kid can play ball and is very quick who can also put points on the board quick. I'm happy but i'm also a Dotson fan and i'm assuming the ship has sailed but he is and will also be a heck of a player. With that said Dotson had plenty of time to say yes but I can understand kids enjoying the moment. I'm sure Zion will will take his time but I hope Hamilton is next or Zion.

I love this one, kid is solid talent but just as important is that he WANTS to play for UNC, not as some business deal but because that is his dream, to be a Tar Heel! That brass ring came within reach, he grabbed it, good on ya young man, good on ya!

You do realize he is going to fly up the rankings into probably 20-25 range when new rankings come out right?

No. I know nothing about the kid except he isn't 6'10" and he doesn't play in the low post. And because of that, I'm somewhat concerned. We need bigs in a bad way.
No arguement there we are sitting pretty with williamson and Hamilton from 2018 as far as 2017 we are in better position with bamba than people realize

Kaydn, I would add Wilkes in with Hamilton and Zion, all 3 are a bit undersized for the 4 but could fit really well as throw back 3's and short stint 4s. Personally, I like Zion maybe a touch more than the other 2 because I see some Larry Johnson traits to his game, I love those big broad shoulders on a kid that can elevate.

You need good guards to get the big men the ball.. The big guys will fall into place. I would be more concerned if Roy didn't have the guards he has lined up. Front court will be fine just give it some time.

Agreed. There's an old adage that says "If you're building an NBA team, you start with the best big man you can get and build on him; if building a college team, you start with the best PG you can find and build around him. Year after year, we see great guard play lead teams with good but not great talent deep into the NCAAT.

Fact is, we have a lot of PT to offer bigs after the coming season. When you couple that with Roy's tendency to run an inside-outside oriented offense, it's understandable that some, myself included, are a bit concerned that we haven't gotten any commitments from '17 bigs. But kids are waiting longer to commit these days, desiring to know who is leaving schools recruiting them and who will be returning.

With many, especially potential OAD big men, immediate PT is their paramount consideration. Sad as it is to say, the desire to get a great education, the sense of belonging to a "family", tradition, and loyalty to a particular state or university aren't the selling points they used to be. And that was much of the cachet associated with UNC. It's why schools like KU, UA, and especially UK/dook have embraced the OAD approach. It's not about liking a school, it's all about getting to the NBA ASAP. That simply doesn't coincide with Roy's M.O. very well.

So like it or not, we're going to have to wait until most of the bigs have done their homework regarding graduating/early departures before we can expect most of them to commit. Many of them may very well wait until the spring to make their choice known. Meanwhile, they're going to enjoy the ego trip associated with being highly coveted, take their allotted visits, and enjoy being feted. Really, who can blame them?

The Black & White back court is gonna be NICE!
I am looking forward to having a backcourt that goes 6'3 and 6'6 right now and they are 2.5 years from seeing the court in college. You put these guys with Woods and Felton and we potentially have the best backcourt rotation in the ACC coming into the 2018-2019 season.

I wouldn't be surprised if you see Roy go a little smaller than he has traditionally played going forward. I think UNC under Roy will always have a post presence at the 5 but I see the 4 spot being more 3/4 type combo forwards that can open up the interior and defend multiple positions. With the guards coming in you also see Roy going with longer , versatile , good defensive potential guards. Think about you could see him running a 3 guard lineup with Felton , White , and Black. In the college game those are 3 guards but size wise that is a lot of length on the perimeter.

There is also another saying in college ball, good big men get you to the NCAAT, great guard play gets you to the final 4. meaning the big men win games for you in the regular season but guards have to step up in the post season.

But big men want to play more outside these days, primary reason being the NBA has severely devalued the center position. Kids that should focus on being power forwards and centers now days want to prove they are Durant, Lebron, Mello, Dirk? Imagine Jabbar, Wilt, or Shaq stepping outside to take treys, last I heard they had pretty decent NBA careers...

BTW if anybody has watched the TV show "My Name Is Earl".... Coby White looks like Crabman

I like this signing a lot and hope we pull our offers to weatherspoon and the other pg. We are good at that position.

Its a shooters game now. ie villanova and golden st. The cavs even shot the ball a heck of a lot better late. Just like recruiting I think its a cycle. I think Roy has done well to still keep players where they should, or need to be on the court.

Just read this tidbit.WOW
"White, a 6-foot-5 point guard, averaged 28.2 points, eight rebounds and seven assists last season at Greenfield, a school about three hours east of Charlotte. His 960 points last season was a school-record. He scored 46 in a game to break the single-game school record set by Harlem Globetrotter Anthony Atkinson."
