Uh, Noah Ruggles...
kid has a leg and can hit from 50+ easily on FG's and hit it through the end zone on kick offs....

Yeah, but the fact that we're bringing in 1-2 additional kickers should tell you how much (or little) he's progressing.
does fedora like to have 2 scholarship placekickers? how about punters?

steve logan once said the problem with kickers is that you never know whether they can
adapt to the faster college game. he said it was about a second faster than high school.

I suppose that is why some staff teach the kid coming off the edge on FG's, get a kid with speed and a bit of strength and turn him lose.

Sure there is, the casuals stroll in mid to end of first qtr, hello-ing and waving to everyone they know on the North side, every game...standing in the aisle for all to see...
Then again the casuals do the same thing at the Smith Center.
Some of us cherish our time and games , we arrive early and leave late, some of us are at a distance so it is meaningful, some live minutes away and don't give a damn.

And some of us just think its f---ing stupid to pay for a membership on a college football forum.

Fact is UNC no longer takes guys that are a risk...Playing with 1 arm behind our back....Meanwhile Bama gets a 4 star DE to take a greyshrit...How do you compete with that...You don't.....

okay tarheelnation11 what's your final opinion of this class?
Gonna copy and paste one of my poasts from a football discussion thread we have going on OOTB:

As for this class, it's not an elite class by any means and I make no bones about that. But it is a good class, with basically no "filler" players. Pretty much every guy in this class, save for one or two, will have an opportunity to earn playing time fairly early on.

Guys with the potential to play right away for the 2017 season are:

- 3*** RB Michael Carter from Navarre, FL. Shifty, fast, elusive, allergic to being tackled. This dude could be a stud. I'm especially high on him. I think he could be a beast. He'll play this season.
- 4**** Weakside DE Jake Lawler from Charlotte
- 4**** DT Xach Gill from Wake Forest (might have a shot at PT. Might redshirt)
- 4**** OL Jonah Melton from Mebane -- 9th best offensive guard in the nation
- 4**** DB Tre Shaw from near Atlanta

as i said before i was unimpressed with fedoras recruiting but i think given the small class that this is a pretty good haul.
not exceptional but pretty good.

too many of our great recruiting classes were based on kids that never played at carolina, let's see how this one works out.

Keep in mind that the transfer from Auburn, Stanton Truitt, was a 4**** ATH coming out of high school. He has two years of eligibility remaining and is immediately eligible to play in 2017.

When it's all said and done, the class isn't really that small. It will finish at ~23 when you account for transfers and grad transfers.

I like the help we seem to be getting on the line for both sides of the ball. I do expect some struggles next year with the team being young, but I am excited for the season to start. Once college basketball and the Masters is over, sports go way down hill for me. I love the golf majors, but not baseball. Well Carolina baseball is good to watch. Already ready for some football.

Its another good class, but not great. We need some difference makers, I just don't see any real big time recruits. We got some good players and some guys that could be really good. Absolutely, nothing wrong with this class. The issue is more coaching and game day decision making. Coaching staff blew 2 games, probably 3 last year with in game adjustments and adjustments.

then they better be able to develop the players...so far, i can pick and pull from the past classes.

dalton is in the perfect spot to dominate at the 3-tech, but if he keeps playing high, then it's a waste of everyone's time.

then you have a guy like naz jones that in a pinch can play every position on a defensive line, he bought in and developed nicely.

with this class, lawler and riley have a chance to be really outstanding in this system...we'll see.

I agree. No excuse losing to dook and State last year. None. And very little excuse losing to Stanford with their best player sitting out and their starting QB out of the game in the first quarter. We had enough Jimmies and Joes to win 11 games last year, our coaching was not up to it.

Simply not true on the Jimmys and Joes part.

Maybe at the start of the year. Our offense was pretty beat up by the end of the year.

Compare our talent level to that of State or dook. We had more talent and I don't even think it's arguable.
It's certainly not arguable with respect to Duke or Moo, but I was fixating on where you said we had enough jimmys and joes to win eleven games last year.

That is not true. Not even remotely. The 2016 team featured a first-rounder, a second or so rounder and then three 5-7th rounders. Like 50% or more of P5 teams have that much talent in a given season.

This team overachieved in 2015 and everyone freaked out and expected Coastal crowns from here on out, and when the 2016 team regressed closer to the mean, now everyone's upset.

Considering that we won 8 games and should have beaten State and dook, that would have put us at 10 wins. And if we beat State and dook and finish on a high note, we then get to play in the ACCCG. Even if we lose that game, which I think very likely, I think we have a very good shot at beating Stanford if our guys had been more confident heading into that game. That was my point.

We wet the proverbial bed against both State and dook, not to mention basically not showing up against VT. That's why I'm so disappointed in this season. We put ourselves in a position to play for the conference title and then played like a high school team down the stretch. If we had beaten our two instate rivals and earned a berth in the ACCCG, I would have been very happy, regardless of what transpired thereafter.

We beat FSU in Tally, which we'd only ever done once before, but I guess you don't get any satisfaction out of that?

We also beat Miami in Miami, meaning that we beat both Florida schools on the road for the first time in school history....

Much like Archer, we were in position to play for the ACCCG after the FSU win, but didn't get it done thanks to the losses to both Moo and Dook, along with the Hurricane fiasco against Va. Tech....I also agree with Archer that we should have definitely beat Stanford without their starting TB and QB as the Cardinals were very much limited on offense, but Carolina couldn't seem to block the Stanford defensive lineman who was a one-man wrecking machine....Should have found a way to neutralize him one way or the other, and we would have won that game IMO!....That game did propel Solomon into all the projected 1st round Mock drafts as Carolina made him look like the premier DL in the country during the Sun Bowl....

You guys do realize that a major, major participant in our wins at FSU and at Miami was Mack Hollins right?

You also surely realize that we had NO defense-stretchers after he went down. This, again, goes back to me saying it's flat-out false that we had enough jimmys and joes. We were a home with a beautiful exterior but rotting supports. As soon as we lost a couple key pieces (Hollins, and Hood for the VT game), we lost a lot of our offensive effectiveness. We just didn't have the depth that was needed. We didn't in 2015 either, if you'll recall. We just simply were fortunate to have very little injuries.

Bottom-line, it's just as easy to say "We beat Duke and State if we have Mack Hollins" as it is to say "We don't beat FSU without Mack Hollins"

No question: Mack Hollins was a difference maker as you say in stretching the defense, but one man shouldn't make or break a team....At least, that is what we've always been told!...A team should be able to adapt, but we didn't adapt our offense after losing Hollins ....Personally, I think our Secondary took a step backward this year in spite of all the experience and notoriety that they had entering the season, and our LBer play at times was pathetic at times during the season....I agree that losing Hood was a big loss for our ability to run between the tackles against Va. Tech and Stanford, but still believe that we should of had enough offense to beat both State and Dook...However, I was wrong!

It became a season of ifs, ands and buts, and we all know the rest of that story....Midseason was full of hope and optimism for the chance at another Coastal division title, but instead ended with a thud and a 3 game losing streak!

It did though. We had no one else to replace him that could replicate his effect....because we had no depth. Fedora's offense is designed to stretch the field horizontally. Mack was a game-changer because he could stretch it vertically while defenses were trying to stop us sideline to sideline.

If you want to call that a recruiting fail on the coaches' part, that's certainly a fair criticism. Quite a few of the receivers we brought in such as Devin Perry, Josh Cabrera, and highly-touted Juval Mollette simply have not panned out to this point. If you want to say that's either a failure in talent evaluation or in player development, that's definitely fair.
