Nice list of Tar Heel's Top 30 Players of All Time by Andrew Jones BUT

He has a great many Tar Heels on the list and passed one or two I thought might be #1 on the list so I'm curious, who is his #1?

Can't disagree with Tyler Hansbrough if we're talking about college careers only. But I agree with UNCPSUFAN when he says Carter has to be on that list. I would rearrange a few of the picks but for the most part, it's a good list.

He was part of 5 Final Fours, 5 ACC tournament title teams, and Coached during our '93 Natty! (So he did win a ring!) He held All-time marks: Scoring, assists. He was 1978 National POY. (One of only 3 Tar Heels in history to get the Wooden) He was the FIRST freshman to start his first game for DES. He was ACC POY and ACC Athelete of the year. He is in the NC HOF and was the 2nd pick in the draft. His ball handling in the 4 Corners Offense forced the NCAA to institute the shot clock!

FYI: I will never lessen the contribution of Psycho, and I agree he is the only one I would even argue is as important as PF. And Vinsanity has to make the list.

You're right Canuck but those were different times in the NCAA. That and a few injuries to Phil's teams cost them as well.
And generationally that's why it is so difficult to place the Blind Bomber or Lenny...talk about different times...but still great Tar Heels.
And I agree with TPF, Tyler wasn't always pretty in his game but dang he competed like nobody else. I can still see that bloody mess coming off the floor early March against the evils. I always wondered why they never showed THAT replay on the big screens, guess it prevented 23k fans from going after ratty and his team, o_O .

Hansbrough:
Consensus 1st Team All-American: 2007, 2008, 2009
Consensus 2nd Team All-American: 2006
1st Team All-ACC: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
Nat' Player of the Year: 2008 - won all 7 NPOY awards (Naismith, AP, Wooden, Rupp, Robertson, NABC, Sporting News)
National Titles/Final Fours: 1/2
ACC Reg Season Titles/Tourney Titles: 3/2
Only player in ACC history to lead team in Scoring/Rebounding for 4 years
20.2 ppg

Ford:
Consensus 1st Team All-American: 1977, 1978
Consensus 2nd Team All-American: 1976
1st Team All-ACC: 1976, 1977, 1978
Nat' Player of the Year: 1978 - won 4 of the 7 NPOY honors (Wooden, Robertson, NABC, Sporting News)
National Titles/Final Fours: 0/1
ACC Reg Season Titles/Tourney Titles: 3/2
18.6 ppg

I'll take Hansbrough as he either wins or ties in every category.

Your numbers are off for Phil AND Psycho has way more opportunities to play in the tourney. The two eras are not comparable and numbers are not the entire story. Psycho was one of the most dominant college players 8 history, but Phil Ford means more to the University and is almost synonymous with the name, Tar Heel!

There is absolutely no way for an outsider to grasp what these players mean to our U and our Family!

When comparing one player to another player in any team sport, titles shouldn’t count.

False. 100% false. Titles always count. Always, always. And please don't come at me with some ridiculous comment about Robert Horry being better than Jordan. Here's the deal - some guys are on winning teams and some guys are the reason their teams win. Hansbrough was the latter and he absolutely deserves the credit for the 2009 championship - more than anyone else by a long shot. Lawson was indeed the difference maker for that team. But Lawson was only so good because Hansbrough demanded it.

50 is a god and IMO, is easily the choice for best UNC player of all time.

But I would like for someone to recap the list for me. I'm assuming now that it's complete y'all can share it with us that don't have premium.

Hang on..... there's an argument over who was the better Tar Heel, Phil Ford or Psycho T????

How many colleges would love to have such a problem!

Can you guys even imagine what Phil's scoring and assist would have been playing under Coach Roy's system?

Add in '76 Olympic gold for Phil. Dean took a lot of heat for having all those ACC players but he shut up the critics. Would Tyler have been as successful playing when there was more size with the traditional post players? Really cannot say but Ford's skill set as pg would dominate in any era. I love Hansbrough and how he played but Phil will always be top Tar Heel to me
