No 7th tonight.

I suffer from plantar fasciitis too so I know how debilitating it can be. Hope he can get ahead of it so it doesn't become a more serious long term issue! I feel bad for the kid too because he was starting to show flashes of internalizing the game plan!

Hopefully he sits the next two games..we play Tulane and western, then have a break until December 17th @ Tennessee! That would be a good amount of time to rest it! It always sucks bc the conditioning aspect, but we don't need 7th to play huge minutes..so I think he would be ok there

I agree, it's better to rest now to get back to full strength before the really important part of the schedule begins.

Any updates on how long he may be out?

Well, it very well could take him out for the season but recall, Marcus struggled with it as well and played but it depends on the degree, how severe. Just to put this out there, if the kid were to sit the rest of the season and was thinking of transferring his sitting and recovery this season could allow him to play at a school like lil Carolina and only miss the number of games he has played in this season. I would hate to see that, I really think 7th could be special for us but we have and are adding even more back court guys and 7th time with us has been injury plagued, has not gone as he thought. Add that to our needing an additional scholly if we were to add yet another guy to the 2018 recruiting class and the writing could be on the wall. This is mostly speculation for now but have heard whispers about 2 of our guys that may be considering transferring for PT reasons and 7th is one of them.

Wouldn't Seventh be able to split time at the PG position with Jalek next year? I know we have some guards coming in, but I see them as more wing type players. With Berry leaving, Woods should have the opportunity for more playing time if he puts the work in to improve his game.

Oh absolutely he would if he is here but how much PT would depend on how far Jalek comes between now and then and I would think Jalek in another year would be a break out guy that may not allow for a lot of back up minutes. I do think 7th wants to be with us but it hasn't gone as he expected thus far and now with this injury as well as Joel logging big time minutes, and don't forget Frances coming in what would be 7th's senior season, the math for him to stay gets hard. Had he come in this season and had a Kenny like jump in his game that math is easier but he has shown some but not huge improvements and now this injury?

This plantar injury, he may get to where he can play on it at some level but it is only going to get better with total rest that does not happen during the season. Marcus struggled with it but he was able to miss a lot of practices to rest it and it didn't go away but was able to play on it. 7th is not going to be missing practices and still be able to get PT on a regular basis.

One more thing to consider, Baby Jet will be eligible next season and that kid can play, IMO he could more than handle any back up duty at the point.

Unless the rules have changed, that’s not how it works. It’s not based games, it’s based on semesters. He would have to leave after this semester to be able to play at a different school in the spring semester next year. The caveat to that is he could apply for a medical waiver because of the total games played being so small this year and injury being the reason he’s missed games. Also, if he’s going back to SC with injury he may be able to play right away with 3 years of eligibility left (medical waiver) based on some rulings in the past.

My gut feeling in watching him is that he is not happy at Carolina. For whatever reason, it just seems to be a bad fit. I want the best for him I think he may transfer JMHO

You guys are reading to much into a young man trying to play thru pain, and I mean some serious PAIN!

We went thru this with Z and a few others that everybody said was leaving.

I watched him a lot yesterday on the bench and away from the action. He and Roy actually walked to the tunnel together going in to halftime. He was involved with his teammates in and out of timeouts. He looked bored sitting on the bench during the game action, but it could just be that he wasn't able to play.

I had it and it took months to get over. Course he’ll be getting better care than i did i would imagine.
I've had plantar fasciitis a couple times over the last 7 years, and like Heelman and others have said, it CAN take several months to get over. It took me generally 6 -10 months each time to be fully recovered, but I did run (distance) half marathons and marathons with it. Not fun. Super painful - to where I'd have to hobble and not put complete weight on it when I walked. Wears you down mentally and physically.

I know of no magic formula to make the recovery better/faster and I've researched it a lot. It is a contraction, tightness, scarring of muscle tissue between top / back of your heel to ball of your foot. You can do icing, stretching, wearing a hard boot, rolling on devices, etc...... but it generally just takes a lot of time to work itself out.

Another option that I think pro athletes undertake - and I was considering - was getting a cortisone shot. This is pretty drastic, pretty painful itself, I've heard, where they use a needle the size you'd use on an elephant. I think it just sort of deadens the area but doesn't really heal it. I've heard those shots CAN lead to longer term muscle structure looseness (in a bad way, like less stability) - so not necessarily a good option either.

Don't forget we'll have a natural PG to back up Jalek in KJ Smith.

I haven't heard anything about him being unhappy at Carolina, per se. That being said, there is a looming "fit" issue that will need to be resolved. The kid has a ton of basketball ability and athleticism, but will that ever be realized here?

I've been vocal on here about the square-peg-round-hole situation created by trying to force him into a PG role pretty much exclusively. I still believe he could thrive at UNC at the 2, but we're about to have a log-jam there. Kenny will be a returning starter, and Andrew is showing he's for real and has already been precocious in picking up the system, and now here comes a big-time scorer in Coby next season.

Ultimately, any decisions to stay or go will have to be made by 7th. I would love to see him thrive at UNC, but yes, there's a chance that his future as a player --- like another SC native, Larry Davis --- may end up being in another system.

I said before the season started that I thought Seventh would end up transferring after this year. I believe that more today than when I said it. And that feeling has nothing to do with his injury.

I would be shocked if one of the freshman Bigs transferred. Like @ProfessorOwl stated, I think all 3 love Carolina and see themselves being an integral part of the team moving forward. I think all 3 are also grounded enough to know that they aren’t difference makers until their junior or senior years. I think they have good camaraderie too. Brooks and Manley showed some the other night when they hooked up on a play. Brooks will ultimately move to the 4 when Luke is gone and would be the presumed starter his junior and senior year. That leaves Huffman and Manley to man the 5. Of course that doesn’t take into account any future Bigs being recruited, but from what I’ve seen in this short time of their freshman seasons, if we didn’t recruit another big for the next 3 years, I think we’d be ok. But we’ll sign a big or two in the next couple of classes and I still think there’s enough to go around for everybody.

I agree. Woods is probably more likely to transfer than one of the bigs. There should be enough playing time to keep them all happy.

Another thing to remember is that Brooks will likely morph into more of a Hybrid role over time. He has a nice face-up game, and when Luke leaves that could be his niche as he extends his effective range. That's also where Walker Miller likely ends up as he matures. Manley and Huff are traditional Bigs, so there's room for everyone.

As for our Bigs, as I said when he was recruited, I think Sterling is a future star for us in the post.

That is my point coach, he could take advantage of the medical red shirt, I think he may have to sit out the number of games he played for us this season, maybe not but in the back of my mind I feel like the NCAA has done that but I am not going to swear to it.

Understand this guys, not saying the kid really wants to leave us, not saying he is a Larry Drew or a Wear twins situation. But when you consider the likelyhood of Jalek being able to go 1&D after this season, I think most at this point would agree with what I said several times this summer that Jalek will be with us at least 2yrs and very likely 3. Add in Baby Jet will be eligible next season and we have Frances already committed for 2019, which would be 7th's senior season, the PT math for him gets hard. Move him to the 2 but we have Kenny, BRob, Platek, with White and Black on the way? Normally I would say Black would be our wing but we now have Naz, will really believe it when I see it but many believe we have Zion ready to commit.

Honestly, 7th and Jalek are about even right now but you know it is not going to be even next season and Jet is a natural PG where as 7th is trying to become a PG but he isn't exactly a natural. Kid has to much talent to sit on the bench but the bench at this point really seems to be his future if he stays with us, does not make me happy to say this, just being real.

If Jalek surprises us and leaves after this year, then Woods is back and the starting PG with the baby jet as the backup. I don't see Jalek leaving, but I've been wrong with these predictions before.

There are several surgical procedures for retractable plantar fasciitis. One open and one endoscopic but the podiatrists I worked with only did them on the worst cases and then with only modest success.
I've had the problem several times over the years but I'm lucky that the heel cord stretching boot worn 6-8 hrs/day always worked in just a few days. The disease is bad but that boot is a medieval torture device.

Yeah, not only is Jalek not going anywhere soon, it would not surprise me to see Roy add another '19 PG --- if nothing else that would shorten the notion of wasting valuable time letting Black try PG .

How good do you think KJ will be for us? To be honest, I don't know much about his game.

Fortunately that is HIGHLY unlikely. If it did we would be in for a rough season, which would be especially disappointing considering the talent we will have available.

KJ is a natural PG, and that in and of itself is a plus. He won't be a scorer like his dad but he understands spacing and running the show. I feel very good about him as the main backup to Jalek.

What makes others think that a freshman Francis would come in and be better than a Senior 7th Woods. It is preached on here by some how hard it is to play point guard at UNC as a freshman, yet many say Francis can take 7th's mins and he may transfer. The dude puts it on Twitter of how happy he is to be a Tar Heel. Enough of the transfer talk, if it happens it happens.

Again, reel it in with the expectations for KJ Smith. Great kid. Career backup/benchwarmer with a great dad. Kid averaged 3 pts and .8 assists at Pacific. Simmer down.
o_O There's nothing to "simmer down" about. He should be a reliable backup PG here. That is a perfectly reasonable expectation.

You can play PG or you can't. Yes, it's harder here than anywhere, and there's a learning curve, but... if ya got it --- ya got it. If ya don't --- ya don't. For example, it was pretty clear to me in short order that Nate Britt would never be successful as a starting PG for UNC. In contrast, it was overwhelmingly clear that Joel Berry would.

As for 7th, I've seen nothing to indicate that it's in him to be a successful starting UNC PG. Like Nate, his best contributions may be in another role.

Does PF actually ever go away? I've had flare ups for over 20 years now. My podiatrist said I should just never walk bare foot and always buy supportive shoes. When mine flares, I go back to rest, rolling my foot on a can, stretching, and self-medicating (Mr. Beam says hello)

Too many peeps love to read volumes into the slightest facial expressions. 7th seems to be an integral part of a very close-knit team. Some times simply increasing PT is not a good trade-off for leaving Family!

I pray this youngster is healthy and happy for the rest of his career!

(even if the unlikely happens and he leaves)
