Not exactly a Timex.....

Damn, that thing is worth more than a Paul Newman Daytona...

If you want to see a crazy valuable (and beautiful) watch just google “Patek 2499”

We need more threads about watches...

I used to be somewhat of a watch collector, even though I really only wore them when I put on a suit. My uncle has given me several - a Rolex, a Tissot, several Hamiltons - some probably close to 100 years old now.

But two things, outside of seeing them as collector’s items, watches are obsolete now because of phones. And for me, it’s a hard no on men wearing jewelry other than a wedding band or class ring.

This is slightly inaccurate. Phones are a great replacement only if you are in a situation where your phone is already out of your pocket and/or you don't need to check the time a lot. Otherwise using a phone to tell the time isn't efficient and waste time (no pun intended).

I worked at a fossil outlet store in college, so needless to say I have a lot of watches. Probably at least 15. Even have a couple of nice Burberry watches. I'm too lazy/cheap to change the batteries in them, so I can't wear the majority of them because they don't work.

I’m going to assume you’re just trolling me. Because I’m not sure I know anyone that considers taking their phone out of their pocket a big deal or time suck.

WTF for that kind of money it better blow me!

Who and why would anyone even the richest of the rich pay that for a watch? Stupid!

The 2499 is probably the greatest watch ever made. It’s gorgeous and has an incredible movement. At this point it’s a collectors piece. People buy them for the same reason that they buy rare vintage cars. Every watch collector wants one and there aren’t anymore being made.

Patek Phillipe is the gold standard in watchmaking. One of their grand complication chronograph will easily fetch 250k new if you can even get one. Then they sell for even more on the secondary market. The desirable Rolex models are the same way. It’s really hard to get a new Daytona for example, and AD’s won’t even sell to you if you have the cash. They save the nice models for collectors who frequently do business with them. Then they sell for more than list price on the secondary market. That’s one thing I hate about Rolex even though I love their watches. Patek is on a completely different level than Rolex though.

Thats why you don't buy quartz movements ;)

Real watches don't use batteries. :D

Here's an internal shot of the Patek ref 2499. It's all mechanical, and entirely done by hand. It's a perpetual calendar grand complication. What that means is that as long as you keep the watch wound, then it will never need to be adjusted. It will tell you the day, date, and phase of the moon with incredible accuracy, forever. It accounts for the different number of days in every month, and even accounts for leap years. Its an incredible piece of mechanical engineering.

I've got a 1982 UNC LCD watch that plays the fight song when you press the upper right button several times quickly. Time for a trip to Antique Roadshow...
