YepLooks like Mack is trying to build a solid defensive foundation too. Can’t tell you how happy that makes me.
Yep
Fedora wanted high flying offense, and almost ignored the D. Mack plans to run a wide open passing attack, but he is making certain he gets a big upgrade in talent on D.
Are there a bunch of 4* studs in this class defensively that I didn't notice? Looks like mostly mid-tier 3* to me.
Mack lucked into getting Wisdom Asaboro. He definitely earned Asante, but Asante's recruitment was weird because it was late and he never attended one of our ghost-town empty stadium gamedays.
Getting great D players to UNC isn't easy because of our academics stuff (ask Marquis Haynes, Jordan Riley, Greg Webb, Shawn Underwood), etc, and because our fan base is pathetically late and quiet - ask Dax. It wasn't the helicopter that turned off Dax and Payton Wilson it was the pathetic gameday.
Mack implored people in his press-conf yesterday to show up and buy seats. He was dead serious. Fans/gameday are what bring in defensive recruits, those guys get-off on the noise and intensity of the crowd and kenan has been lame since Butch was fired.

Preach on.4* Lawless, 4* Asante and 4* West, 4* Sinclair in next years class. Helluva good start to me.
Lawless - last yr's haul, not this yrs. Prior regime gets credit for that one.4* Lawless, 4* Asante and 4* West, 4* Sinclair in next years class. Helluva good start to me.
That’s enough talent to get prison raped by Clemson or Bama in the CFP.4 guys on the DL who are in the ESPN 300.
Now that gets you well grounded to make the playoffs.
Mack will get better defensive players than Larry. But it won’t be for not trying. Unc and Larry offered plenty of studs. They just didnt want to come here.Lawless - last yr's haul, not this yrs. Prior regime gets credit for that one.
Asante is a 3* on rivals. He might be good, but we still got more 4* D players in 2018 than 2019.
West - who?
Sinclair - we're talking about this yr, not 2020
The comment, which I replied to, from Woad was about how the prior regime ignored defensive players and how this class was so drastically different. I don't see the difference in terms of big-name players. Asante and Wisdom are probably the biggest names, but that probably equals Brant Lawless/Chris Collins for 2018, or Lawler/Shaw/Cotman from 2017.... and Wisdom was coming here regardless. UVA was lucky to get him for a visit but he was always coming here.
I'm excited about the flips, but this classes strength appears to be on the offensive side, much like prior regime's. Go review the prior yrs and include Brant on them, and you'll see what I mean - which is contrary to what Woad said.
Can’t blame them when they knew they’d be on the field 40 minutes a game.Mack will get better defensive players than Larry. But it won’t be for not trying. Unc and Larry offered plenty of studs. They just didnt want to come here.

Well then you are clearly changing the subject and trying to make some arg about an entirely different point. Have at it.I'm talking about what Mack has done since he's gotten year, not just this year.
Per ESPN, 6 of top 8 are offense. Per rivals top 4 are offense. So again, that looks familiar..
10 of the top 13 players in this class are on the defensive side. But sure, it's all about offense?

Of course, but I was arguing against the "ignored D" or "didn't emphasize D" statements. Your note about West and Sinclair reminds me that last spring Fed had Hakeem Beamon and Payton Wilson who both bailed largely due to crappy gameday rather than being ignored. The 2020 class is all Mack. In three months, he's gotten multiple 4* defensive players thus far. But yes, it's all about the offense.

There aren't many coaches in any sport that "ignore" one side of the ball. Some emphasize special teams a bit more (like Fedora and Beamer), but i'm not familiar with coaches who "ignore" one side of the ball. If they do, they don't fire a guy then hire Gene Chizik out of retirement, they don't commit Beamon, Payton, get into the final two for Jordan Davis, Rick Sandidge, Dax, etc.
4 guys on the DL who are in the ESPN 300.

Lawless fell into out lap because Tennessee fired Butch Jones. Lawless had become close to the staff, and so was ready to look elsewhere. he'd liked Thigpen, and Thigpen came back to UNC.Nah, gotta give Mack and company credit for keeping Lawless here considering he hasn't played a down. I'm talking about what Mack has done since he's gotten year, not just this year. Getting multiple 4 * recruits a year ahead, in only his first 2-3 months? HUGE. Asante is a 4* PER 247 Sports. He'll be the most important Frosh in this years class, IMO.
So you're comparing Fedora and his what, 6 years here to Mack and his 3 months? Seems legit. I don't need to review the classes, I know what Fedora did and didn't do.

Mack in talking about all the signees for 2019 seems clear he intends Asaboro for DL, and as he said he could play 350, I assume Mack wants him as NG by 2020. Mack also noted that Asim Richards could play DT - he already is 290 and could play at 325 or so. And we have had talk of McKethan trying DT. McKethan might be able to carry 360 and play NG.We're in the running for one 5 star DE from NC and 3 larger 4 star SDEs from NC. The bigger guys are suited for a 3-4 so they are not just WSDEs.
I suspect we'll land at least 3 top 300, maybe more like top 200, DL recruits next year but maybe that's optimistic.
We don't know yet who is being recruited for NG but I am sure we're looking. There's one emerging NC prospect that's intriguing. Isn't rated as high but the light seems to have just come on for the guy, and he has prototypical size for a NG. May not be rated top 300 even if he keeps improving but he's in-state and looks like a real possibility. We haven't offered yet, however.
