OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

So is it too early for us to start another "Greensboro vs. Brooklyn/NYC" discussion, so @Hark_The_Sound_2010, @dadika13, and @carolinablue34 can downtalk us Southerners and tells us how dumb it is to have the tourney in the Triad?

Would you like us to smoke our pipes, wear our Harvard sweaters and talk down to you southerners like most of us like to do? :D I heard you guys love that.

Nah, let's start it up. Always a hoot.

Okay let's break it down. Here's my argument for permanently in Greensboro or a 10-year rotation of 5 years Greensboro, 3 year Charlotte, 1 year Atlanta or NYC, and 1 year wild card (could be somewhere crazy like Vegas or even one of the ACC team's home courts:

1. In 2018 and beyond, in terms of TV presence, it barely matters what physical location the games are held in. TV is TV. The networks are going to pay the best payout for the leagues that have the most enticing/marketable product.
2. Per point #1, the ACC is always going to be one of the top 3 most valued conference tourneys, if not the #1 most valued/sought tourney. The ACC is basketball supremacy.
3. Now, it's been a decade+ since the needs/wants of the attending fan has mattered. TV money dwarfs gate sales money. Thus, the needs of the TV network always trump the needs of the attending fan (as well as the teams). That's why the NFL plays on Thursdays, that's why the ACC plays on weird nights now like Thursdays, etc. etc. I recognize that the needs of the fans don't matter anymore, but......
4. What could really give the ACC Tournament an added boost to market it and make it appealing to TV is sold out, raucous crowds. Putting it in Greensboro and Charlotte on a regular rotation will provide that. Let's face it, Carolina and Duke are probably always going to be in the Top 25 come ACC Tourney time. And their fanbases will travel. State's fanbase would travel to Greensboro or Charlotte even if State was 0-30 because as much as I hate them, I have to admit Moo's fans travel well. Furthermore, Charlotte is basically the second home of VT fans after Blacksburg, and of course a smattering of Wake and Clemson fans live in Charlotte and N.C.

So... since the location really doesn't matter because the network demand for the ACC Tourney is always going to be there, why not put it somewhere where it's going to draw the most fans, so that it looks better on TV? That location is Greensboro and Charlotte. I know non-NC schools think the NC schools get an unfair advantage in the ACC, but even those non-NC schools have to admit North Carolina is the official state of college basketball. Why not throw the N.C. fans a bone and put tournament regularly in Greensboro. Keeping it in the same spot every year builds a mystique, much like the Charlotte ACCCG for football is doing. And putting it in Greensboro and/or Charlotte ensures that the games will always be packed and look good on TV.

Do not come at me with the argument of how great the old Big East tournament was in MSG. The reason that worked so well is because so many Big East schools were close to New York, meaning a healthy chunk of their alumni lived in or close to New York, and also because most of those old Big East schools were strictly basketball schools, so the Big East Tourney was THE draw.

That shit will never work for the ACC in terms of putting it in New York. It just won't ever be the same as the old Big East tourney. New York City is too far from the majority of ACC schools (all of the ACC schools, in fact, save Syracuse). Greensboro is a very centralized location in terms of ACC schools, via driving distance. Obviously it ain't close to Syracuse, BC, or Miami, but it's within 7.5 hours driving distance from UNC, Duke, State, Wake, Clemson, GT, FSU's second home base of Atlanta, VT, Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Louisville. That's 11 of 15 schools, and two of those remaining four are ND and Miami who have alumni everywhere.

@TarHeelNation11

I was busting your chops. I'm actually in agreement that the ACC tournament is better off in North Carolina. Location wise it's the most convenient for most of the schools, and it makes sense from a traditional and logistical standpoint as well. The money will come no matter where it's played.

Counterpoint:

I went to every game in DC in 2016 when UNC won it all. That UNC vs UVa game was awesome. DC is the best spot because they won it all and it’s pretty close to me.

tl;dr

This is me. I'm very glad we won, but besides Luke balling out, there was a lot that wasn't fun about that game. We dominated the game but kept them in it because of our stupid, sloppy unforced turnovers. It was frustrating to see.

Oh well, on to the next. Suck it, Moo. On to South Bend to defend The Streak!

I’d say considering we had 20 sloppy turnovers and gave up a 19-0 run we were lucky that we had our best half of shooting EVER IN AN ACC GAME FOR ANY ACC TEAM but i cant risk getting nominated for asinine poast of the year by archer.

Right. But let’s say we don’t shoot historically well, why is the assumption that we’d still be as careless with the ball? Why isn’t the assumption that because we weren’t shooting it better, we’d put more of a premium on ball security?

You can get one even if you're 2nd team AA. I gotta believe Maye is in the discussion for AA.
Yeah I am with you. I think 2nd team this year is possible. My point was with one more year to go, he could be a bigger contender then for stuff like ACC POY or 1st team also (provided he has another great year).

I forget all the ways one can qualify. Remind me please.
Retired is NPOY (major award like AP or Wooden or Naismith, stuff like Sports Illustrated doesn't count). Honored is 1st or 2nd team AA (certain publications don't count but I can't recall which), ACC POY, Final Four MOP, MVP of National Champions (as voted on by team), and Olympic Gold Medalist

As of today, I can't imagine Luke isn't penciled in as a 2nd team AA. That could change if he plays poorly down the stretch. But right now, I have to think people see him that way - especially considering the "story of Luke Maye". Who wouldn't want to vote him on to the AA team and then write a story about how a "former walk-on" hits The Shot and then follows it up with an AA year?

Yeah I think he’s a 2nd teamer as well, but I don’t get a vote

It is reasonable to say the two biggest shots in Carolina basketball history are:

1. Michael Jordan vs. Georgetown in 1982
2. Luke Maye vs. Kentucky in 2017

If you Google "UNC game winning shot" every result on the front page except one is Luke Maye vs. Kentucky (the other is about Berry's shot to beat Wake this year)

That's a great top 2, would be interesting to see what people would say constitutes the rest of the top 5 or 10. Marcus Paige was real close to having that #2 spot.

If UNC had won that game, I think Paige's shot would've supplanted MJ's at the top of the list. But then we might not have ever had the Luke Maye shot so....
