OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

I was really impressed with the freshmen! I hope they get a lot more playing time! And, Bacot actually seemed a bit more confident. When Caleb fell over... I was praying! That was scary!

But, overall, you gotta like how it all played-out!

And, now we face a former assistant with a 5* freshman lottery pick. I think Haase should be considered as Roy's replacement.

Things are back to normal. Not saying we’re winning a natty but we at least look the part again.
Except for the fact we are getting off to god-awful slow starts that will get us murdered by better teams in the Maui and absolutely raped in conference. We better get that straightened out.

Jordan trolling duke. One of the colorways of his newest Jordan XXXV is called the sisterhood. Notice the color.

I wish Roy would put his ego aside and realize he needs to adjust. This team doesn't have the players he needs to run his offense and his defensive philosophy is about 5 years behind the game.
At least 5 years behind. He's got the keys until he's ready to hand them over.

It's frustrating, to me, to see all the turnovers. Not having a go-to 3-pt shooter year after year is tough, too. I'll be glad when that awful Class of 2017 is finally gone.

It's hilarious to see Brooks being a preseason ACC POY candidate. He's gotten worse.

Ill be honest. UNC basketball for years was my lifes blood. Since the scandal, not so much. I would pencil in game days, and almost feel like Christmas morning each time they played. Now when i watch them, I dont even recognize any of the players. I have lost my love for the game. All sports really. How recruiting is handled, mountains of evidence on paying players, one and done, the politics and social flagging, and honestly, the sorry talent avaliable makes it hard to enjoy. UNC players should be a household name for at least 3 years. Now we can have the worse team every, and still have lottery picks. I really want to be excited for these kids, but im not. I miss how it use to be.

The OAD, and its residual effects, have ruined college basketball. Even the best of teams are dogshit compared to teams from yesteryear. But it’s more than just the product. It’s the entire culture that surrounds the sport.

The college basketball product is a much worse product than it used to be.

I think 3 straight OAD PGs has really hurt the program. I was really high on Caleb (and Cole) but these guys just aren’t built for college ball and our system.

I’m getting to the point where I don’t want any OADs. They have an actual hit rate of like 25% and most of them just wind up using the school for a season to adjust to the next level then leave once they have.

That said, we have Bacot, Kessler, RJ, Puff, Walton, Styles, Dunn who all look like multi year guys who will probably be the core to a final four team in 2 years.

The problem is any one of those guys can blow up during the dance, and 2 or 3 games will be all they need to leave. Does anyone really feel like bradley was set to leave when he did. OAD is all these guys are thinking about. Bacot seemed to think all last year that je was gone. If he stays aggressive, he is out. Yesteryear was by far a better product. NBA as well as college. If those 7 you mentioned was it, and not clogged up by iso ball specialist in the guard positions, then it would be easier to watch. And i love roy, but he needs to adapt to the game. He has a high winning percentage, but it could be higher if he would adapt. Anyway, ill catch up on them eventually. Ps, i do like waltons hair. Old school flair

yeah, this has been going on for years...sometimes the talent rose to the top to mask the defensive philosophy, but we’ve complained about his concept since he’s been here, not taking anything away from his hof accomplishments, however.

poor shot selection and effort can be dealt with by the coaches, blue steel or whatever they want to call themselves now.

Around January I started hating last year's team. Even got to the point where I wouldn't even watch games. I'm basically at that point now with this team. I'm still going to watch a few more games before I completely give up on them, but I just can't find anything to like about this team.

When Roy retires, I’ll essentially be finished with CBB.

Because some of the older people want to keep the Dean connection alive, I guess. Personally, I think it would be a horrible hire unless he goes somewhere and proves himself first.

It’s why I’m a huge Vanderbilt and UNCG fan these days. I’d love to see Stack and Wes succeed so they are the obvious choice for those that want to keep it in the family and not Hubert.

I think once OAD is gone it will get better. I keep hearing about the NBA wanting to make the G League like a minor league system for guys who don’t wanna go to college which would be great for CBB.

Give me 3+ year actual student athletes playing because they want to win a title and I’ll be very happy.

I would absolutely love for Stack to succeed at Vandy and get the job here. That's the dream scenario for me.

I like this. I dont like paying the player part. I have a feeling paying will be easier to the top schools. Also, the NBA will still poach players to build the G league brand. Its what they do. College basketball is nothing more than a farm as it is. It is in line with AA teams in baseball.

So i pose this question to OOTB. If this season ends up being a bust, who is it on?
New crop of frosh?
The plauged upper class?
Hubert Davis?
Roy and staff as a whole?
The fans not being in stadium?
Covid related issues?
Lingering scandal issues?

I ask only because noone knows what this team will do next. Highly ranked classes and individual players seem to be lacking major fundamentals that should be already in place from high school. Hitting 75% of freethrows per player should be a must. A team full of projects doesnt bode well in our system. Speaking of system, should roy tier his system to allow for young teams to develop and grow into his preferred style? Last year proved this system was beyond their capabilities. I havent managed to force myself to watch this team enough to see potential for excelling in his system. Thoughts

It's squarely on Roy. He has to learn how to adjust to the players he has, but he refuses to do so. He's coaching this team like his normal experienced teams. These guys don't have 3-4 years in the system. You have to adjust to that. He also needs to accept the fact that the game has changed and he's got to guard the three.

I know his ego won't allow him to admit that he needs to change, which concerns me some for the future. He either has to change how he coaches or how he recruits.

The best thing that could happen for Roy would be the end of the OAD era while he has a few years left. He's the best in the game when it comes to how things USED to be.

I dread the day Roy retires. I have a bad feeling they are going to replace him with Hubert and thats a HUGE mistake!

Has roy shot his proverbial wad???
Didnt watch the game thankfully. But reading up on it seems alot like last year.
