The long awaited day is here. The championship of the OOTB Movie Tournament. There have been so many great movies throughout the nomination process and tournament, but now only two remain as the creme de la creme. You have until 5 PM on Thursday to vote for your choices in this matchup. Popular vote will determine which movie advances, and in the case of a tie in voting, the tiebreak score will determine who moves forward. I will do a brief rundown of each matchup that includes my vote in that matchup under a spoiler warning, and then the matchups will be listed again at the bottom for easier copy/pasting. Also, when the winner is announced, there will be a special surprise following the tournament, as there was for the TV Tournament. Let's get to it.
MICHAEL CORLEONE REGIONAL CHAMPION: #2 seed The Godfather
How The Godfather got here: Defeated #15 seed The Usual Suspects, #10 seed The Godfather: Part II, #3 seed Saving Private Ryan, #1 seed The Shawshank Redemption, #1 seed Raiders of the Lost Ark
HAN SOLO REGIONAL CHAMPION: #1 seed Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
How Star Wars got here: Defeated #16 seed Aliens, #9 seed Psycho, #5 seed E.T., #10 seed The Empire Strikes Back, #2 seed The Big Lebowski
This has been a knock down drag out tournament, and both of our remaining choices had to beat some truly exceptional films to get this far. Both of these movies are among the most successful and influential ever made, so choosing a champion will be no easy task. In one corner, we have the Best Picture winner of the 1972 Academy Awards, The Godfather. Based on Mario Puzo's novel of the same name, this movie is one of the best acted, best directed, best written, and just all around best movies of all time. Violence punctuates this story of family, loyalty, crime, power, and a unique take on the American dream. On the other side of this matchup stands a Best Picture nominee for the 1977 Academy Awards, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. George Lucas took viewers to places never previously imagined, created characters who are still gracing movie screens 40 years after their debut, and gave audiences a sense of wonder and amazement that few movies have successfully been able to duplicate. One of the most financially successful movies of all time, Star Wars reminds us all that one person can make a difference for a cause they believe in. This is a matchup worthy of a championship, and whichever movie comes out on top will certainly be a deserving winner in my eyes.
