I love that area a bunch but I haven't been there in over 20 years and I've never fished it. I can't help you much. And being a long time poaster here, I don't know of any board regulars that fly fish and would be able to help you. But if you make your way to Central or Southwest VA, I can give you some good spots to hit even though this time of the year wouldn't be the most fruitful.

On a related note, if you're in the Davidson River campground area, you have to check out Sliding Rock. Awesome place.

Good luck.

Long time poaster, pshhhhh!!

I don't fish but I see a lot of people fly fishing at Wilson Creek. There's probably at least eight miles of accessible water along the main section (and not in the rapids) so plenty of room to find your own spot. It's not easy to get there from Boone, though. You'd probably take the Globe Road out of Blowing Rock and that's a steep, windy, five miles of gravel. We see a lot of people lost up there with Florida tags, LOL.

I know there are people who travel into Tennessee to fly fish on the Holston River. That might not be too much longer a drive than getting to Wilson Creek from Boone. Also nearby are the Watauga River and the New River, but I don't know if they are good fishing spots.

Fly fishins a little hi brow for that area. I would suggest a zebco 33 with a nice dough ball presentation and genuine chinese red and white bobber.
