HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Many Carolina alums and fans keep an eye on both national and international rankings. We're glad to see Pitt backers do the same. :)

Sort shocks me that UVa is so far down that list. I had assumed that they would've been higher, somewhere in the UNC range.

Virginia is a good school no doubt about that.

However, I think the amount of Total Research they conduct per year may be part of the reason.

According to the "Center for Measuring University Performance" Total Research expenditures per year (2013):

University of Pittsburgh(Pittsburgh): $880.4 million
University of North Carolina(Chapel Hill): $762.6 million
University of Virginia: $287.2 million

Entirely possible. I do know that UVa throws a large chunk of their endowment into their medical school. Maybe that is the reason that they're so far down the list. Regardless though, to have 5 universities in the top 100 is a testament!

No one has commented on this yet, so I'll add the observation that the top 6 ACC Schools listed in both rankings are all in the COASTAL DIVISION of the ACC (adding Miami to the five schools listed above). And VT is roughly in the middle of rankings for the Atlantic Div. schools, Must explain why the Coastal Division schools are so much less respected, football-wise, than the football powerhouses that are the Atlantic Division.......;)

Blu, interesting comment about the Medical School.

Duke University: #8
University of Pittsburgh: #16
University of North Carolina: #22
University of Virginia: #26
University of Miami: #45
Wake Forest University: #49

That also says we are blessed, in the state of NC, to have that many cutting edge hospital systems.

The ACC is a great conference and most Pitt fans/alums are glad to now be associated with the many prestigious conference universities.

I think Pitt will make a great addition to the ACC and look forward to developing new rivalries and competing at the highest levels.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Last time I checked it's an ATHLETICS conference ;) I don't really give a rip about how good or bad other school's academics are in the conference.

BUT, it's nice to have really good schools in the conference, regardless :)

Also, geez no trolls have mentioned AFAM / paper classes yet?? The lurkers are slipping :)

Tar Heel, The ACC is both an Athletic and Academic association/conference. Google ACC-IAC for the Academic association side of the ACC.

However (to clarify), when I said that Pitt wanted to compete at the highest levels, I meant in both athletics and academics.

I know it is. I'm just of the belief that academics should take a backseat when it comes to, say, which schools should be added to the conference.

West Virginia, for instance, is too good a fit athletically and geographically and rivalry-based, not to add to the conference. Just one man's opinion. The ACC, overall, is comprised of excellent academic schools. Adding a West Virginia -- just like adding a Louisville, an excellent addition to the conference -- wouldn't hurt the other schools' academics or the perception of the conference.

North Carolina has a good football team.

Hard fought game.

It will be interesting to see how the Coastal shakes out.
