Friday : BYU at SMU, Dook at Northwestern

Saturday: Pitt at Cincy, GT at Syracuse, Cal at Auburn, MooU vs. Tennessee in Charlotte, UVA at WakeForest, Jacksonville St at Louisville, Duquesne at BC, Marshall at VT, FAMU at Miami, Cal Poly at Stanford, App ST at Clemson.

The Optimist looks at that and thinks, all right: chances for redemption, chances for the league to show itself better than Week 1.

The Pessimist thinks, oh no: this could be another disastrous weekend.

The basic Big 12 attitude is that SMU football simply cannot ever matter enough to be worthy of the Big 12, which makes the BYU at SMU game a big deal for both leagues and their jockeying t be #3.

The ACC simply cannot ever win enough games against SEC or BT, even when that means beating Northwestern or Vanderbilt.

Piit-Cincy is another ACC-Big 12 clash, this one a border state game. Cal may have a shot to keep the game close at Auburn because the Tigers are still rebuilding. Wufs vs. Vols would be huge if the ACC gets the upset.

Whoever wins in GT at Syracuse needs to finish the year well.

Any other losses by the ACC t team this week will be more of terribly harmful to the league.

The good for the ACC on Friday was that Dook won in OT. The Devils looked sound in a road win, but it was just Northwestern. One over the BT, but still just Northwestern.

SMU, however, disappointed in losing at Home to BYU. The Ponies lost first and foremost because the BYU front 7 owned the SMU OL all night. SMU RBs failed to pick the slack and block well. SMU responded in the way that almost all teams now do if they feel they can: they concluded that the problem would not matter if only they played the fastest QB they could. SMU kicked 5FGs, as BYU had no need to worry about the backup QB beating them with the passing game. BYU contained the QB running and bottled up the RBs, and so SMU could not get into the end zone. That great TE on SMU even got shut down because the QB simply could not get any type passing game going as he scrambled around showing how fast he is.

I have no doubt that the basic BYU Game Plan for D was to totally disrupt the SMU OL, which would mess up the whole offense. That would lead quickly to an in effective QB who is the better passer in every sense and get him benched. And then have the D prepared to keep the fast QB from ever breaking loose. Do that, and you win because of the D and because of the SMU staff falling into your trap. Andre Ware could be seen as in on the ploy because he was calling for 'the better athlete to avoid the BYU pass rush' from get go, and then he spent the second half ignoring the facts of that QB's play: failing to see open receivers, just missing open receivers, failing to ever break even one halfway big run because BYU knows how to contain and how to tackle.

The SMU D played well enough to win, obviously.

Syracuse has early TD lead on GT. McCord TD pass to Pena.

Now it is Cuse 21-0. McCord could prove to be as valuable a portal QB as Can Ward. GT;s King just masses. perfect fake pitch that froze the entire Cuse D, allowing King to rush for a 26 yard TD.

Several McCord passes have been dropped, or Cuse like;ey wood have scored at least once more. MCord is very good.

Cincy handling Pitt rather easily, which is another bad sign about the ACC.

Pitt hit 53 FG as time expired in 2nd quarter to cut Cincy lead to 17-6.

Cuse leads GT 31-14. Orange are for real. If not for Haynes King, GT would be in very bad shape. King has more than 200 yards total offense and has scored both TDs.

Cuse does what it mjuast to keep the ball and win. McCord competed a pass for 1st down with a perfect throw to a covered Orande Gadsden. McCord is a a national top QB.
