Moses was a legend in Virginia HS basketball like no other. Even before that he was so dominant inside as a youngster that one youth league passed a rule that actually said "Moses Malone must play Guard".
The sad thing is that because of his basketball prowess he was passed through schools with so little education that he was functionally illiterate after graduating HS. He committed to Maryland but even Lefty Drissell's infamous shenanigans couldn't get him admitted, so he jumped to the ABA.
The irony of his HS days is that he was an intelligent guy who became well-spoken later in life. It's a shame the "halo effect" as it's called passed him through school without a meaningful education. So many kids who were good athletes but not as ultimately accomplished as Moses too often end up out of the game with no future outside of it.
