Payton Wilson tears ACL.. will visit other schools

The 'visiting other schools' was being talked about for some time.

Losing Wilson would be a major blow. He is not just a 4 * from NC - he is from HIllsborough. If a guy from the backyard who commits then sees the program as one that may be better to avoid, then we may see more issues revealed.

I think what we saw from the D early at VT and last week vs. Miami should signal that Papuchis is able to get that job done, even when the rest of the team has problems. So that should help. But HS players are not so naive they do not know when a college HC is being self-defeating in some way.

Especially when opposing coaching staffs are using our 1 win season against us. Not factoring in the massive injuries etc. Seems the parent should be above that but..

Sounds to me like he made up his mind but his parents want him to take a few visits to make sure he's making the right decision. Nothing wrong with that.

If Clemson handles State this weekend I expect State to drop another game before the end of the year. FSU and Louisville wins not looking as good now but they are wins against big name school. Some of the MooU luster will fade. If State wins this weekend and wins out, they will be in the ACC championship game and will likely turn a few recruits. That's what happens win you win 10 or 11 games. Very much like our 2015.

We need to keep him and hope he keeps recruiting other guys around NC who haven't committed yet

Except we never got the recruiting boost expected because of the revamp of the investigation. Would love to close our with a top 25 class but still thesis point I would settle for mid 30's

What makes you assume that is the reason, the one and only reason, we did not get a recruiting bump after 2015? Fedora's previous career as HC suggests that perhaps his pattern is to amass a lot of talent for a couple of classes and then leave a total lack of depth and experienced talent. Perhaps Fedora cannot be but a wildly swinging coach who within 2 years of double digit wins will see that team down to a vert few wins.

2014 recruiting ranking #30 2015 #28 2016 #32 2017 #29 so far we have not seen the recruiting bump expected. Now whether its all Fedora, or the "scandal" or both. I honestly don't know and I am sorry for my statement made it seem as if I was hanging my hat totally on the "scandal". I personally think it's a mix of both. But after winning 11 and 8 games I thought we would just for a top 15-20 class and we aren't close yet. That's not to say we won't but it's not looking good

Just looking at the class ranking as compared to other schools isn't a good comparison. You need to compare it to previous years rankings for UNC. Classes in the low 30's are bad for Alabama, but if our previous few years our rankings were in the 50's then that would be a good bump.

Can see both sides of this. We haven't seen the bump in recruiting we would like, a couple of top 15 classes. Could be for many reasons - NCAA sanctions and possibility of further NCAA sanctions, not finishing seasons strong, not a really strong recruiting staff, etc. Don't know if any or all of these are true but they are possibilities. Without a doubt other schools have been using the negativity against us. Now that the NCAA mess is over we have to deal with this poor season and firing the coach rumors. Hopefully all these issues will be put to bed soon and we can move forward. We do seem to be on the list of many high * recruits. Not getting them but at least in the conversation.

As far as being a bump in prior recruiting classes for UNC. This is probably true but that's can't be our goal if we are ever going to be relevant in football, We have got to raise expectations.

Prior to the decommitment of 4* Tyler S the majority of our recruits were 4*. Now with Payton, Dyami, Jordyn, Jace, Chris Collins - that is 50% of our ten being 4*.

Devon Lawrence, a 4* is probably going to choose us. 6 out of 11 would be awesome.

If we'd had more wins, our chances of getting Dax would've been be better and seven 4* would be a really big number. And if we were winning maybe a wildcard like Leddie Brown, Sandidge, William Barnes or Mychale could've pushed it to 8.

It takes more than just winning. The best players don't want to play in a half empty stadium for "fans" who silently sit on their ass the whole game.

As long as people think that the football program should build a powerhouse BEFORE the fans actually start showing up and supporting the team, we're never going to get there.

So yeah we need to win obviously. But we also need to find a way to make unc look like less of a basketball only school by filling kenan and getting it rocking. That has to be the case whether we're playing western carolina or we're playing Alabama at home. Idk if they need to drop the price of tickets or what, but that culture goes a long way to building a program and signing top level recruits.

I've mentioned this before, but the biggest reason Kenan isn't full is because of the entitlement attitude from a good portion of our fan base. UNC fans expect to win, because that's what we do in almost every sport we participate in. In basketball, soccer, field hockey, lax, baseball, etc. we are almost always legitimately competing for championships. The football team doesn't do that and those fans will consider the team a failure until they become contenders consistently. The expectations of the fan base need to be adjusted in order for it to fill up when we are just average. Not sure how you can adjust expectations.

This is a hard one to figure out. I do think a full, loud stadium will help the team and recruiting but we don't have it. I don't see it happening without improvement. Anybody know how attendance was in 2015 compared to this year or last? How was the crowd for Cal compared to how it was against Miami? Not many schools have full, loud stadiums without success. That is especially true against rivals like the in state schools - we have to win those games. We should all send AJ ideas for improving the game day experience. He has the connections to get them heard. I do want to see a full, loud stadium.

As for entitlement, I'm not so sure. And I definitely don't want to accept expectations of 6 wins being OK and 8 wins being a great year - I think that would ensure you do no better. We seem to be caught between wanting to be a power and not knowing how to (or being willing to). Stadium/facility campaigns, head coaches touting great times to come, etc. get us worked up and build enthusiasm. When results don't follow we crest the hill and head to the valley. You can only go that route so many times before people quit believing it's possible. We seemed to have turned the corner in 2015. Things were good, won the coastal, played the championship game well, but lost our bowl game. We were talked about a lot on ESPN (in a positive way) and on TV a lot. Last year really hurt in my opinion. That team should have been much better than 8-5 and we lost momentum. This year has absolutely taken the steam out of us. It's been a terrible year and one that will undoubtedly be used against us by many coaches (and just when the NCAA crap was finally over). Every team has injuries (not nearly to the extent we do) and people kind of discount that. For most they will see a team with only a couple of wins and those coming against poor competition. It is very important for us to beat Pitt and at least play State close for us to salvage any face this season. I think it is also important for us to make some coaching change, even if it's just a redefinition of roles, to look like we are resolving our issues.

You're talking desire/hope vs. expectation. No rational fan should expect UNC to be an ACC contender right now. The team should strive for more, but fans aren't the team. What I was more referring to was fans having an expectation or "bench mark" for the team to reach before they show up. Right now it's too high. It's set at championship level. Get that bench mark to around 6-8 games and more people will show up and desire/hope for more.

I don't think so. We are coming off an 11 win season and an 8 win season (where we under performed down the stretch) and going into the 6th year of the head coach. I think the expectation should be 8 - 10 wins this year. We lost a lot on offense and a couple were unexpected, pushing the expectation down to 6 - 8 wins. With a year of rebuilding the expectation should go right back to 8 - 10 wins. It's no big deal to be a 6 win team with a 12 game schedule where you play 2 patsies each year and 5 or 6 other teams that won't sniff the top 25. My hope/desire is to win the ACC and be in the top 10. I don't believe for a minute that we'll fill Kenan with a string of 6 win seasons.

If you're talking about lowering expectations and making the game a fun day experience to share with family and friends, where we're happy if we win but not upset of we don't - then I can see that perspective. In many ways that would make things much easier. But we don't need facility upgrades and well paid coaches for that.

Historically speaking UNC is on average a 6-8 win team. There is no reason fans should expect us to be more than that at this point. Hope and desire that we are better, but expecting more than that doesn't make sense.

That's what I'm trying to say. I think the Cubs are the perfect example. Cubs fans didn't expect to win a world series or even contend in most years because of their history. But they still showed up because they wanted to be there for the experience. If they didn't win it was still enjoyable for them because they got to spend time watching the game they love and got to hang out with friends and family who are fans of the same team Being there for those reasons and not simply being there because they expect to see a win is what helped them fill up during bad years. If you show up simply because you expect a win, then you aren't going to show up when the team doesn't win. I'm not sure how you can accomplish that attitude adjustment at UNC though. Especially considering all of the success other teams on campus are having.

tarheel0910, I'm not even sure how to respond to that last post. We just view this point differently.
