Pick your best tarheels player between the years 2000-2010

If I'm picking "best", it has to be Tyler Hansbrough. If I'm picking "favorite", it's Danny Green.

#50 Hansbrough

As far as I'm concerned, for that decade, he sit's at the top of a list of fabulous Heels: Barnes, May, Lawson, Felton, Ellington, Henson, Green, Zeller etc. etc. (note: I've left off one 2005 championship player who was an amazing Heel but his legacy is so soiled I refuse to include him)

Please edit title to make Tar Heels two words. No I am not the grammar police but that is a pet peeve of mine, especially on this site.

Best player - don't see how you can choose anyone besides Tyler. Helped hang a banner, pretty much every individual award there is, played four years and undefeated at HIS

Best player Tyler by far, MVP Lawson!
I agree with this, I've always been a Lawson guy (between him & Ford for my all time UNC PG), gotta love #50 but I'm not sure we win it in '09 without Lawson, he made the big play(s) in the LSU game when we were down 8.

I'm assuming favorite isn't part of the equation, just the best. If so, it is Lawson for me. He was unstoppable when he was healthy and engaged (and so were the Heels). Tyler was great and so consistent but Lawson was incredible.

I don't think Barnes would qualify but if so he would have to be close. I don't think people realize how good he was his two years here.

I think had Marvin Williams stayed four years he would have been on the list. That is why I hate to see guys going early unless absolute hardship - not getting to see what could have been

As crazy as it sounds McCants was my favorite I name a dog I got from a shelter that was crazy as a shit house rat McCants lol!
Not crazy at all....McCants wasn't a massive headcase until he got to the NBA. Roy had quite a way of reigning him while he was in Chapel Hill.

"Best" has to begin and end with Tyler for those years.

Now "Favorite" might draw quite a few different answers.

Lawson. The key that made the engine run. That 09 team was one of the best college bball teams I've ever seen.

Before even reading any posts. There's no question. Tyler. He had the tuffness, want to,heart, and drive to do everything it took to get a W!!! And that's on and off the court.

Since there is one and only one obvious answer, I decided to answer by year in that window, along with runner-ups.

1999-2000: Ed Cota, runner-up: Brendan Haywood
2000-2001: Joseph Forte, runner-up: Brendan Haywood
2001-2002: Jason Capel, runner-up: Kris Lang
2002-2003: Rashad McCants, runner-up: Jawad Williams
2003-2004: Rashad McCants, runner-up: Sean May
2004-2005: Sean May, runner-up: Raymond Felton
2005-2006: Tyler Hansbrough, runner-up: David Noel
2006-2007: Tyler Hansbrough, runner-up: Brandan Wright
2007-2008: Tyler Hansbrough, runner-up: Ty Lawson
2008-2009: Ty Lawson, runner-up: Tyler Hansbrough
2009-2010: Ed Davis, runner-up: Deon Thompson

50. End of discussion.

In addition it's hard for me to fathom 50 not being everyone's favorite player of the last 25 years. The dude was what we want every Carolina player to be. I like Lawson, I really do. He was a monster for us. But how can you pick Lawson as your favorite player - a guy that was known to take plays off here and there - over a guy that literally gave his blood, sweat and tears every time out for 4 solid years. And to have accomplished what he accomplished? Holy smokes. Tyler is the standard that all future UNC players will be measured against until there is another Tyler...if that ever even happens.

I can understand that, but I like to take into account what they went through while they were here. Because of that, I've got to go with Jawad as my favorite. His freshman year couldn't have gone any worse, but he ended up with a ring at the end. Always thought he was underrated as a leader too.

I can appreciate that. But the other side to that is this: If Jawad was the player, worker, leader that Hansbrough was, then maybe Jawad's freshman year turns out better than it did. I only say that because I remember Jawad as a freshman. In fact, I remember him before he even got to Carolina. I remember him making statements such as "Carolina's never had a player like me" or something to that effect. He needed to mature. And he did and I'm glad for it. He was a tremendous leader his senior year and without him, we probably don't win the championship.

However, Tyler came in from day 1 and worked harder than anyone else, kept his mouth shut and produced like no one before him. As my previous post stated, he is what we as Carolina fans want every player to be. He is the standard now. He's easily my favorite player to ever put on the Tar Heel uniform. There are other guys I loved for the same reason you loved Jawad - David Noel comes to mind. But for the top spot on my favorites list, I'm taking the guy that was everything we want in a Carolina player from day 1.

That's true. Anytime the words UNC basketball and best come up in the same sentence it's hard not to include #50.

Agree 100% slinger.
After all, how many Tar Heels have an opponents home court named after them?
That high school gym down in Durham.... it'll always be known as H.I.S
