Please explain the "defense depression" to me

I've seen a lot of folks on this board -- both this week and just in general during the Fedora Era -- who seem chronically depressed because our defense is not a Top 25 defense (or even, yes, a good defense whatsoever). Like, I get that some of y'all are old school and what not, but isn't a 'W' the goal, regardless of how you obtain it?

It just seems like some of y'all are so quick to despair after a loss -- even during this past two season where we've won at a rarely-reached clip for UNC Football -- OR a win because "the defense is so bad." Is the scintillating, high-scoring offense not enough to offset this? Last year's offense was historically good, and a lot of y'all still seemed real hung up on "yeah, but our defense is so bad." Man, I don't care if we win 100-99 or 3-0, a win is a win. If we were a ground-and-pound team that simply played lights-out defense and had zero offense but we won, I'd be just as happy as when Fedora's version of the Heels wins 54-51.

Especially in the "Did 34-3 Break your Spirit?" thread, I saw a few comments that were like "the defense is so bad that it's hard to have faith" blah blah blah. I guess my take home question is:

Is the lack of a good defense so frustrating and depressing to y'all that you can't have faith in this team / enjoy the wins? If so, college football may not be your thing for much longer. Look all over the nation. Everyone scores in big numbers. I guess I just don't understand this disconnect.
