There is some fun debate going on about this on the board in several threads, so I thought I'd ask the general question.

Let's assume we sign 3 more guys. We may have more scholarships than that, but they aren't guaranteed, so let's use that number.

Most of us seem to agree that some if not all of those should be bigs. Preferrably PFs, since we have Tony, but I'm sure a top C would be welcome, too. So for this poll, I'll just call them "bigs." Feel free to express your preference with more detail in comments.

First choice:
Bamba, Washington, Knox (or Vanderbilt)

Second choice:
Bamba, Washington, Coleman*

Third choice (assuming we don't get Bamba and maybe not Washington, either):
3 bigs

* I intended to limit this to people with offers, and Coleman doesn't have an offer. If Roy chooses not to offer him, then I guess I'll wait until next year for a pure PG. Our other PG offers and interests both look good, but they aren't pure PGs and we already have several combos who can play point if we need them to. So they would be welcome additions if we had more scholarships, but not under the current circumstances.

I know many here are hoping we sign Randolph. And I agree that he looks good. But if we do that, we'll have only 2 certain scholarships left and will still have zero bigs. Makes me nervous.

I am torn on this question because the truth is I would love for us to get Randolph, would love for us to get any of the 3 point guards we are talking about. I mean, these are quality talents we are talking about.

But as the great Randy Travis says..."on the other hand" our area of need for centers or power forwards is so great. Think about it, as it is right now going in to the 2018 season we would have Tony and Luke as our entire front court, zero depth. And what happens if Tony blows up this season and becomes able to be one & done, our front becomes Luke Maye and ONLY luke Maye? Not to mention if sickness or injury hits or foul trouble?

Based on what I have seen so far I would not be happy with Luke starting for us so you can easy see how I feel about the notion that Luke could be the ONLY front court guy we have on our roster. That is why I am so strong that we need 3 front court guys from this class, we can get by with 2 but 3 gives us breather room. And if those 3 happen to be 3 & 4 star rated guys, fine, Roy will develop them in to players. But it is real hard to turn a 2 guard in to a center and a 6'6" 185lb wing is hard to depend on being able to battle 6'9" 235lbs college power forwards.

I would LOVE to have a brand new Porche 911 and I can dream about it but not afford it so I am not going by the Porche dealer today to look in to buying one, the cost is way more than the benefit. Is the cost of Randolph more than the pay back will be, IDK and because I don't know I have to defer to the safer choice of 3 bigs from this class.

I think there is a 95% chance that Jackson leaves after this year.

I think there is a 75% chance that Berry leaves after this year.

So I say quit worrying about the availability of 'ships. We'll have them. And with that in mind, I'm thinking we'll sign

Felton
Platek
PG - Coleman/Sexton/Weatherspoon
Wing - Randolph
Big #1 - Bamba
Big #2 - Washington

You seriously think we're gonna sign Bamba?

If there was a "Whichever position we can get a OAD at" option I would have selected that.

We need a top 5 player to sign on - regardless of position. That would help us two fold - one, that player would be the best player on our team next year (assuming JJ and Berry are gone) and two, it would send a big message on the recruiting trail as well.

2 bigs and a Wing in '17 and then 1 PG, 1 wing, and I Big in '18 ,if we have the schollies, would be ideal to me!

Signing a top 5 prospect wouldn't do anything. Signing a top 5 prospect and have them play well enough to get drafted in the lottery next year would though. But just signing them won't do anything to kill the perception that we aren't a school that can accommodate a OAD player.

I agree that we will have room so for me if Sexton is a difference maker go get him and Randolph, PJ, and a PF/C to be named later. One more year with a deep run and clear of cloud and we will be in even better shape to fill the thin spots. Perfect world of course...

This is true. I guess I was more hoping that UNC not being able to accommodate a OAD player was exaggerated, but if it's actually true, then yes - just the act of signing wouldn't get much accomplished.

Whichever category Randolph + 2 Bigs would fall under. I think at 6'7, he could have a similar role to Theo as a G/F combo.

I'd bank on us having more than 3 seeing that there's more than a good chance JJ jumps to the NBA next season.

EDIT: Saw the option

That would be a fine class.

I wouldn't rule out Roy bringing in 6 guys but I think that's only happened once. 2006. And that recruiting was done while we were still riding high from the 2005 championship (and the surprisingly good showing in 2006).

That was the Roy Era when Roy was arguably the best recruiter in college basketball. He isn't chopped liver now, but the recruiting game has changed, Carolina isn't wearing a halo any more, and the competition is stiffer.

All of which is to say that I won't be surprised if we just end up with a 5-man class, even with Justin leaving.

Starting to look more and more like Roy wants a SF in this class With the offer to Kris Wilkes, that's 3 SFs with offers.
