This thread is definitely a downer, but as we lost another great today in Carrie Fisher, I decided to make a poll. The poll will not be able to include all we lost, but I will include an "other" option to try to include those. Also, I titled it "Most Notable" so as to hopefully avoid speaking ill of any of the people mentioned, because some will be controversial, but they died this year, so they might be the most notable in your mind.

The following are ones I couldn't include in the poll, but would be encompassed by the "other" choice (and I couldn't even list every single one): Abe Vigoda, Glenn Frey, Dan Haggarty, George Kennedy, Antonin Scalia, Patty Duke, Garry Shandling, Frank Sinatra Jr., Nancy Reagan, Pat Conroy, Chyna, Merle Haggard, Alan Young, Guy Clark, Morley Safer, Pat Summitt, Anton Yelchin, Gordie Howe, Garry Marshall, Dennis Green, Elie Wiesel, John Saunders, Kenny Baker, David Huddleston, Fidel Castro, Florence Henderson, Ron Glass, Leon Russell, Robert Vaughn, Janet Reno, Leonard Cohen, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Alan Thicke, Craig Sager, and George Michael.

There are many GREAT ones lost this year. I voted David Bowie, as I appreciated his contributions more than any of the others. However, if I had to rank them on their global impact, I'm thinking it would be Ali first, then maybe Arnie next.

Isn't this thread premature?
It is a little, and someone else big could go in the last 4 days of 2016, but in that event, you can change your vote to other if you feel that's more notable than the people above.

I voted Prince because that was probably the most surprising. Relatively young, seemed in good health. I think like Bowie he was a totally unique individual and made the music he wanted to make. However, because Star Wars and Harry Potter have been such big parts of my life, I was pretty devastated by the loss of Fisher and Rickman as well. So many titans across so many different fields. I think Ali might have been the "biggest" but I'm sticking with my vote because it seemed like Prince had more to give.

The Final Four for me would be Prince, Bowie, Ali and Palmer. John Glenn just on the outside.

This would have been better as a Rank 'em.

I thought about doing a Rank 'em but felt with so many it might be better served as a poll. The downside is you're limited to one choice, but if they were number one on your rank 'em, I figured you could vote for them

Dude, did Chick just hijack your account?
I liked those two songs. He's playing a cool Cat's Eye Gretsch Synchromatic in the Faith video. I like that Bo Diddley beat. I liked those boots, too!

They're guilty pleasures. I'm not proud of it.

Haha... gotcha. While it's sad that he passed, I don't really care for his songs. The worst thing about his death is that the god-awful Wake me up song and video is getting shown everywhere.

I absolutely HATED Wham!

Those two, especially for the time, were palatable.

I don't care for either of the songs that @strummingram poasted. I also dislike most Wham songs except Careless Whisper, Freedom, and maybe I'm Your Man (guilty pleasures). All that said, Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 is a really good album IMO. The material is much more mature, and it really gave him a chance to showcase his amazing vocal talent.

Check out his cover of Stevie Wonder's "They Won't Go When I Go" from that album. You might also be interested in "Waiting for That Day," which lists Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as co-writers in the credits since it borrows heavily from You Can't Always Get What You Want (and is subtitled as such).

WOW! I had forgotten a lot of those.

What an ironic album title - since that Wham song was so bad, I am prejudiced in that I don't want to ever listen to anything else by the dude. However since it's a Stevie Wonder tune, I might give it a spin.

Pretty good thread for a bad thread.

That was a really hard poll choice. Without peeking, I voted for
Muhammad Ali. He seemed to be the most notable based on his level of professional athletic success and well-publicized religious and political beliefs.
Looks like that's the most popular choice so far. I'd be curious to hear other poasters' votes and rationale.

That's an incredible list of decedents. I never considered that growing old would mean seeing the deaths of the people who defined my cultural youth.

Voted for Glenn. The others are all actors/singers/athletes. They had an impact and will rightfully be remembered fondly, but they're entertainers when it comes down to it. John Glenn was the first American to freaking orbit the earth and one of the first to go to space at all. Can you imagine the colossal balls that took given the technology and limited knowledge of the day? Not to mention capping that off with a couple decades of public service.

Love the guitar and the boots. He was one of those artists that I would never buy his CD, but would find myself singing along to many of his songs when I heard them.

I voted for John Glenn but would have voted for Glenn Frey as a write in otherwise.

Yeah, 2016 doubled down on two of my favorite movies. Took two from Star Wars and two from Blazing Saddles. I don't remember who watches Always Sunny besides THN, but David Huddleston was also in the Christmas episode of that, he played Danny Devito's former business partner.
