Props To Roy

Thought in large part we won the game for a few reasons.

1. Calling a timeout when UK took a 64-59 lead... We got a little lucky on the offensive possession with Theo's floater bouncing in off the rim, but you can tell he discussed going zone in that timeout. Good timeout.

2. Going zone for 2 possessions. UK didn't score and we went on our run because of it. Huge... UK didn't see it coming.

3. No timeout on the final possession.

Roy had a bit last 5 minutes or so.

I know I'm one to criticize Roy consistently and I don't really back off my criticism.

BUT

If my team is a #1 seed, I may want Roy over everyone else... If my memory is right, Roy is 5-1 in the Elite 8 at UNC as a #1 and that one loss came on a team that started 3 freshman. I don't think Roy does a lot when we're not expected to have a chance to win it all... But when he has a #1, his teams deliver.

2 straight final fours... That's pretty good stuff.

I almost shat myself when he called a TO when UK was ahead and the tide turned right after.

Yeah great job going to that zone and realizing that Maye was the hot hand and trusting him for the last few minutes as Hicks was struggling. Besides Maye's herioc shot he also had the assist on the pass to Justin Jackson that put the Heels up by 3. Also smart to limit Britt's minutes in 2nd half as Nate was struggling against the Cats.

For the record, I don't think anybody wanted a timeout in that spot. The folks that complain about timeouts from time to time is usually are referring to times when Roy lets other teams goes on 20-4 runs without calling a timeout

Yeah, it makes sense NOT to call the TO in this situation, as UK was not able to set up defensively. Cal even mentioned that he wished he had called one right after they tied it up, but we got the ball inbounds so quickly he didn't react in time. Again, that's good coaching and preparation by Roy and his staff to have our guys know exactly what to do in that situation.

I don't think he called the timeout because UK took the lead, I think it was to get subs in the game.. Either way, he stuck to his philosophy ( borrowed from Dean) and it paid off this time.

No TO on the last possession was a great call because probably if we missed the worst case was OT.

Roy proved the doubters wrong just like he always does. The difference this time is a few of them (especially the OP) finally admitted it! Despite constant criticism from peeps that don't know as much basketball as his famous little finger, Roy stays the course and continues to set the standard for tournament success and class!

He called the timeout because his players were panicked and this is the only time, outside last minute comebacks, that he calls them! The last few seconds were brilliant as well because he practices these situations all year long! Announcers and ABC fans were the only ones surprised when TP and Maye came through! He trusted Maye because he develops his entire team and not just the chosen few like Slimy and Ratty!

Great win by a great team with one of the greatest coaches in history!
