Question about ? DL coach Keith Gilmore

People speak highly of Gilmore but our DL was a definite weak link and we had some recruiting misses on the DL the last couple of years.

Last year at this time, there was a major article on recruiting that focused on DL players in NC. It noted that UNC should be able to load up.

Gilmore failed to deliver even half what almost all of us expected. So I see him as overrated as a recruiter. Disch was out best recruiter on the D staff, easily the best.

As for his ability to develop players and to make DL game plans - what we showeed says it all. He accomplished very little.

He brought in 3 very good D linemen this year. His recruiting and teaching is much better then what some here think it is. He was the only coach on the staff that our new D coordinator felt was worth keeping. That should tell you and some our are fans something about him. If this winds up happening it will be a loss for us and a gain for you. Good luck to coach Gilmore what ever happens.

Shy Tuttle was a big miss. Longtime UNC lean who was eventually swayed to Tennessee.

Jalen Dalton is at UNC.

Darian Roseboro was an NC State guy from day one and never considered UNC.

Lee Autry was known to be a non-qualifier, so UNC stopped recruiting him.

Recruiting isn't a black-and-white business, and not landing the guys on your wish list doesn't necessarily equate to failure. The guys who ended up committing (Strowbridge and Crawford) are as good as anyone else left in-state.

Sterling Johnson who had ties to UNC was also a miss. Or did we not offer (as I have heard)??

Unfortunately we don't have a lot to go on with Gilmore. I'd say to new to rate.
We understand that he was well liked, but that in itself will not get you a job. The players that Gilmore inherited were generally undersized, struggled academically (kicked off team) or had minimal impact due to injury, inexperience or ability. He did have some solid recruits, but it may be a year or 2 before we know their impact. This year we needed a minimum of 2 DT's, but probably needed 3. Only 1 DT committed, but he should be a good one.
I'm not sure how much the issues on the DL is specific to Gilmore or to the overall defensive scheme/meltdown that occurred under the prior defensive staff. One thing is for sure though . . . our 2015 DL coach should have much better results than 2014 because it's basically impossible to be worse.

Still do not understand what happened with UNC recruiting (or not recruiting) S. Johnson. I don't get that at all.

Good points, JP4UNC!

I'm kind of on the fence about Gilmore because I'm just not sure that last year's UNC defense gave him a true measure of what the man can actually do as a D-Line Coach?.....I mean even before the season started, Kids were ruled ineligible that he was counting on to help the DL, and a couple, including a very talented Redshirt freshman DL, left UNC before the season even started...In addition, Farmer didn't even know he was going to be eligible to play or not, until the season had already started, and Farmer who had went back and forth between the OL & DL throughout his career at Carolina, was supposed to be the anchor of our DL?....In hind sight, I say Huh?......That really wasn't fair to either Farmer or Gilmore IMO because Farmer was still learning on the job, even as a Senior.....Crawford and Strowbridge should help in the future because they are recruited DL, and the young DL from last year should also be much improved size/strength and experience-wise by the time the 15' season begins..
.
I can't speak to what kind of recruiter that Gilmore is, but would rather hear what the kids themselves said about why they committed, and what part did Gilmore play in that committment?.....We also need to bare in mind the negative recruiting that schools have been using, and continue to use against our Coaches with a lot of those kids listening and actually believing all that garbage, signing elsewhere on signing-day?.....And we also need to bare in mind that due to sanctions, we were short 15 schlorships over the past 3 years, and had to use not only former OL, but recruited DEs in the interior of the defense, and they were either just too small to stand their ground or make a push into the backfield in most cases...Instead, some of those guys were plowed-over, or pushed around by O-Lineman that outweighted them by 40 or more pounds?....Those guys gave all they had, but due to inexperience at the position, and lack of size for the position, spelled big trouble, and we all seen the results, and I don't know if Coaching could or could not do anything about it to be honest?...

The reason that I'm still on the fence somewhat is that last year's defensive team was the worst in school history, so that has to be rightfully part of any discussion about Gilmore, since he was a member of the defensive coaching staff that is accountable for last year's defensive disaster.....Gilmore would be best served to stay where he is, and learn under 2 former defensive coordinators in Pap and Chiz...Besides, Chizik could have chosen to replace Gilmore, but did not?.....That silence but willingness to retain Gilmore by Chizik, kinda makes me think that Chizik must see something that he likes about Gilmore, or he would have already replaced him?

And for that reason, I am part-willing to give Gilmore a pass on last season!

The fact UNC is still fighting to retain him is all you really need to know. Gene knows a little bit about what makes for a good coach and recruiter. Make no mistake about it, Gilmore's relationships with HS coaches and players is what ND is after.

I think his coaching ability is really an unknown. Look at the cards he was dealt personel wise with youth and lack of size. As a whole the D was bad but he had no run stoppers nor a coordinator that utilized any blitz packages. You can't expect a dline as small as ours was to dominate the line of scrimmage.
