...and thank you, Jeff Lebo (and Dean Smith)...

So... one of the things I learned from Coach Smith was always be prepared. And even though they don't come up often, when "special situations" arise, be ready. So..., 2 seconds left, length of the court, down 2 --- ya practice what we called 100, 200 or 500, depending on time and situation. OSU played right into our hands by shoughing and allowed the half-court pass/timeout option. Now we have a fighting chance, and Jeff draws up a cross-lob for Pete and SPLASH!.... and I'll tell ya what, that was JUSTICE for a long day!

- I've watched OSU before and they were as advertised, midwest thug-ball with guys who should be on a football field --- cross body-blocks on D, and on offense more walking than senior day at the mall. Thing is, you hafta play thru CONTACT, and we did a lousy job of that in the first half. You also hafta clean the glass, and fortunately that improved later.

- playing against such a physical team also exposed our need for a legit PG, but we finally overcame that by increased aggression and Carolina basketball.

- as for the latter, we recovered from almost getting blown out by finding our TRANSITION mojo in the first half and by SCRAMBLING in the second. Folks, going to 44 got us back in position to pull this one out, make no mistake.

- Lordy, we still make some of the worst passes to f*** up transition possessions, but we made enough good ones at key times.

- Also, geez, we couldn't buy a 3 in some stretches, even with good looks, but how big was Leaky's down the stretch?

- big-time positive numbers: After getting killed on the glass in the first half, we outrebounded them by 6 for the game! --- and 20 Assists ain't bad either. We also cut down on the stupid TOs in the second half.

Anyway, take that, national media! A good day, with the Zags beating that idiot Oats, capped off with the good guys winning one for truth, justce, and the Carolina way!...

Definitely some good and some bad to take from this game, but it’s much more fun dissecting it coming off a win.

Good to see the guys fight back and thanks to the clock operator for having a slow finger on the 1.2 second play.

Actually, that wasn't slow --- one could even argue a bit quick --- 0.8 allows catch-and-shoot, so one would think a timeout would be less.

I thought the reason we won was because I watched the 2nd half on my tablet with the sound muted. 😆

Seriously, the pressure that Hubert talked about (but held back on using the last few games) was HUGE in turning this thing around. Heels did a much better job valuing the ball in 2nd half as well.

This game felt like an absolute must win game, and fortunately the Heels found a way.

However... We have got to start hitting some 3's consistently. Caleb and RJ firing up those quick 3's about makes my head explode.

But he didn’t just catch and shoot. He actually caught, spun then jumped and shot. Definitely took more than 1.2 seconds from the time he touched the ball. I’ve watched it about 10 times and the clock didn’t start immediately when he touched it. There was a 0.1 - 0.2 second delay.

You can legally catch-and-shoot over .3.
1.2 is a long time.

Grover Love is a loose cannon that needs to be reined in big time because his stupid shot selection is a problem then/now/forward and is a big reason this game was extended. RJ is not a pg and he shows it often and picks the most inopportune times to do stupid things but at least he's a bit more "thoughtful" than Love. Some of the defense was really good .. huge bright spot. Bacot still has no inside shot outside of arms reach of the rim and Nance looks like he might be a better option as the "5".
Pulled off an OT win against the 23rd? ranked team in a Heel home crowd environment ... and damn lucky to do it. jmo

Trimble was bad offensively in the first half… can’t press all the time.. have to save it for when you need it

You actually can press the whole game if you practice it and are conditioned for it.

But I'd mainly like to see us press when we put some subs in (Trimble, Puff, maybe Styles.) Do it when Bacot is resting. Switch up the defense to catch the opposition off guard. Tire them out a bit.

Dude...

I’m with you there Mark… now 3 for 3 after vowing to not watch live games, not participate in game threads, nor prediction contests.
At the half I flipped TV over to Vikings Colts game, and when it ended I didn't want to jinx the Heels, so I kept watching that game on my tablet with no audio. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but Woody always told us to "go where you go, and do what you do", so like you I'm just trying to do my part. Haha

So you're the guy who jinxed Jeff Saturday today.

I get the frustration. Love is a must! I get frustrated with his dribbling and jacking up shots, but he is well worth it! He hits big shots, penetrates, creates, and has the guts to turn the game around.

I love the toughness shown by the Heels in half two and OT. We gave as good as we got
and were rewarded with a big-time win that can provide confidence as the season unfolds.
Carolina makes mistakes, but we have some serious ballers on our team. Caleb, Leaky, Pete, and RJ
hit big, big shots and Armando played liked a first team AA. GDTBATH

True but in gambling the odds typically even out. Tonight they managed to finally do something with about 6 min left in regulation to take control of the game. The cavalier play of the first half and a fair portion of the second will get them beat more than not. As juniors and seniors one would think they would have this out of their systems by now. Glad they won, will they finally wake up and embrace what it takes to play a complete game and make that a baseline? 🙏

Thanks, Gary, for your summary, I enjoyed it.

Where do I begin?

Think I will mention the crowd first. There were at least 10-15K Carolina fans in attendance and the Smith Center fans should take notice, as that crowd was loud the entire game, and it did not come and go in volume as it mostly does in the Smith Center. We actually had more fans than Kentucky did.

One thing you have to give the Cats, is that they do travel well, but we were better today. Lots of former players there as well. I sat 6 seats from Derrick Phelps (who never seemed to sit down) and 7 or so from Roy. I actually made the in-house camera at one point. Haha, since I was with my regular group less one, you won't pick me out.

In our group, we have one who owns several Lear jets and I love those planes, it's like riding on air guys. Don't get the idea that we get free trips in any of his jets, we don't.

He charters those for us several times a year and they are not cheap. The expense of flying on a chartered Lear jet is astronomical, so we put the trips on each of our travel dockets and save up to pay for the trips. Needless to say, I am about bone dry in the travel budget, or so my wife tells me. So, enough about this.

It's irritating to watch Bacot miss opportunities over and over within 2 Ft of the basket, he has 6 such opportunities missed in this game. That said, we have to temper criticisms due to his shoulder issues. Then again, you have to seriously question his coordination as he has a real problem controlling the ball and just making a simple drive. As much as I love the guy and his affinity for UNC, he will not play in the NBA IMO. Actually, he might be better off using his Covid year and play again next year, but I have my doubts about it.

In the 1st half, it was not pleasant watching RJ, Caleb, & Bacot just make bad passes that had no shot of being completed, you could see them coming a mile away as they were telegraphing them to OSU. One of the guys called T/O's on both Caleb and RJ before they made them which shows you how telegraphed they were. It was good to see the bench play in this environment as it won't get much scarier for those guys than what they experienced today and will help, or it should help them to play just a little looser and relax which will speed up their development.

Along with bad passing in the 1st half, we took a multitude of bad shots again. At one point, Roy looked over at us and said they needed to sit until they could recognize what a good shot looked like. He was rather pissed at their play but was always encouraging the guys. Ok, I'll stop my bitching and complaining now and talk about some positives.

The second half from about the 11-minute mark on is where we began to really apply the pressure. I was so happy to see us run 44 defense and the pressure got in the heads of the OSU players down until the end of regulation. If Leaky had not been so tired, I think he may have done a better defensive job on Sensabaugh on the last bucket by OSU in regulation.

Jeff Lebo was the architect of that last play in regulation. Great Call and great execution by Nance to make that shot. I looked down at the OSU bench and the players AND Coaches were just stunned, and I don't think they recovered from it. This was like old school BB going back through the annals of Carolina basketball where we saw the Heels snatch victory out of the mouth of defeat so many times, and it may have been games just like this one that bonded you to Carolina over the years.

In my mind, this was a must win game. It will infuse confidence and strengthen the chemistry being developed, while getting us a Q1 win and also exposing areas that still need working on. I liked the grit shown by all who played and especially Caleb & RJ.

Oh, and I heard, but did not see, that Elliot Cadeau was in attendance. Was told by multiple people. Now, we move on to the next BIG10 opponent in Michigan next Wednesday. I will be there to watch, how about you?

ETA: Cadeau was not at the game per several folks who follow recruiting. I only know that I personally did not see him.

I aint ragging on anyone or trolling G .. RJ and Love were combined 5-18 from 3 .. RJ had 4 dimes and 3TO .. Love was 8-20 from inside the 3 with 7 assist and 2 TO which would lead one to believe better things happen when he's inside the 3 penetrating, shooting, driving, dishing than shooting outside. Same could be said for RJ .. he's better when he see's opportunity and takes advantage instead of forcing and going the road to nowhere. Nance was less than impressive with 0-6 from 3 with a 2/2 a/t ratio although he did some decent D rebounding. And I appreciate the hell out of Armando and what he does as a UNC ambassador but the dude has 0 offensive game much more than 5 ft. from the rim.
I have no great basketball mind but I'm in my 60th yr. watching UNC bball and imo this group is doing/going through the same thing as they did last year. They (starters) just aren't playing good team UNC bball especially on offense and it's frustrating as hell from a fans perspective. This team is, or should be, much better than what their showing !

I missed the 1st half, got back in time for the entire 2nd half. That was a massive win with how poorly the ACC has performed. A quad 1 win is huge for where we stand in relation to the NET.

Caleb Love lifted a loss to a win. I understand the frustration with him, but when they were down and out, he once again said not so fast.

RJ struggled for most of the game, but made big plays when needed. After O State kept over hedging heavy on him and Caleb producing a Caleb bail out 28 footer with 5 seconds on the shot clock I told my buddies someone has to be a DUDE and split that over hedge. It was RJ !!! He split it for a lightly contested finger roll, then deked it when the big over hedged and stepped back on him for a 3. HUGE POSSESSIONS!!!!

I give Hubert and RJ big credit on the next key play in my opinion. With 12 seconds on the shot clock and looking like a reset RJ was right in front of Hubert. You could see a pause. They had the right big to "put in the wash" along the sideline. Instead of reversing it to Caleb to create end of clock, he got a pick along the sideline. Sure enough the young big over extended, bailed out the possession and put the 90% free throw shooter on the line to drill them both. That was an in the moment adjustment.

The final play was so much a NBA use of the clock. I thought .8 going off was too much by the score keeper on the in bound to half court, but they got into the front court. That allowed the position to inbound. 1.2 is an eternity inbounding from there, although I worried the quick fingers of the score keeper might get 'em. Great trust in Nance, they ran similar for Brady in the National Championship a long crosscourt design, but Brady fell. Pete just posted. WHAT A PERFECT PASS FROM LEAKY !!!!

I am concerned with our lack of bigs. I like Puff but he is too light in the ass to play the 4 against strong teams. It is almost a disservice having him there. Styles has not stepped up. Hopefully Jalen gets healthy enough to be that 3rd guy. Nance and Mando are it at this point. Thank God Nance came, now stay healthy big fellas.

HUGE WIN !!!

I certainly feel your pain, but...., we won did we not. I also agree that this team looks suspiciously like last year's and mostly has the exact same issues and complaints. We are a better team this year and we are improving game over game the last 3. Actually, it was about somewhere around games 16-18 that we started our climb last year, so I think the next 6 games might tell us much about just how good we really will be.

Patience is not something most on here possess, but I would recommend it to you and others, if you believe, as do I, that this team is very much like last years with a couple of exceptions. We played in the last game of the year, no?

Look, I feel ya on the frustrations, but we're still in the process of getting back to Carolina basketball. Patience may be needed...

Agreed. We were getting our arse handed to us in these matchups last year. Bama is damn good, that 4 OT game goes the other way the non conference looks pretty dang good. The ACC does not look strong, handle buisness in essentially a home game called a neutral against Michigan, and I think a strong run should be in order.

Far from a finished product, but most quit on the National runners up last year at this point. Patience grasshopper, patience.

This was very close to a must win game can get in the month of December. To play in MSG on National TV is a life memory for these young men. How the season has been for our team thus far this game can flip our season. It should help instill the Teams confidence and to just keep progressing from there. We have a long way to go on improving but we seem to be headed in the right direction. Ohio State had so many moving screens, holds, hits and elbows all throughout the game. The Team is improving and they look like they are starting to gel. We need to keep evolving especially since we play Michigan next week in Charlotte. (I will be there) Beating any team is great but I especially love when we beat a Big ten school. Somehow it just seems to taste a little sweeter. The Team seemed to be playing and having a lot of fun out there today and that shows me that they are bonding. For those who didn’t or haven’t seen Armando’s interview right after the game need to look it up. It brought a tear to my eyes because that is exactly what it feels like to be a Tar Heel. It is an absolute honor and a Blessing from God. GDTBATH

I think it's funny how people are praising Love and putting down Davis regarding this game.

Love was barely efficient from shooting (but still efficient) at 8-20 and 22 points. His assists are where he really helped out. He was less than 33% from 3 which isn't efficient from the 3 line, however he was overall. He was 5-6 from inside the 3 line and that's where he shined as well.

Davis was 6-13 with 21 points. That's very efficient, mostly bolstered by his free throw shooting. Davis was not good from 3 today at only 20% and 1-5. He was 5-8 inside the arc. Which is decent. Davis helped out with his rebounding and causing turnovers, against a guy who was so much bigger and literally manhandling him at points.

It's also important to note at the end stretch of the regulation, it was RJ willing us back with scoring before the eventual Nance tying bucket.

Definitely felt like the good old days when you could never count out a Dean Smith team.

Felt like a turning point.
To fight back as we did, but still lose would have been brutal; to finish the job with perfect coaching
and execution on the Pete shot and force overtime was so, so Carolina-style CLUTCH.
It should demonstrate that grit, toughness, and trust in each other (DES- “play hard, play smart,
play together”) never gets old. Go Heels, trap the wolverines!

Before Nance hit that shot, when it looked like we were going to drop this one when Key hit that huge shot that gave them the lead with 2 sec left the thought I had was that we did come in to this game to win it, we have not gone in to every game that way this season. I was going to say this team has built on the prior 2 games, that even if we lost that game we were better with still a lot of room we can still improve. When Nance hit that shot any remaining doubt melted away, this team had stood toe to toe with a team built to take advantage of how we are built, physically strong burley guys that were allowed to play "extra" physical.

That first half, we played well enough to beat most teams but the last 15mins of that first half they were physically taking it to us and we came up with to many empty trips. But the common element that had lead to our prior losses I did not see happening, we were taking good shots, we were just missing them. The law of averages says keep taking good shots, they will begin to drop. In addition, while they did get a few easier shots at times, OSU made a lot of well defended shots, hard shots (law of averages works there as well). The question was, did we come out the second half and they still take it to us and we see that half time lead swell to about 20 before we cut it a lose by single digits or could we start hitting some of those good shots and win this thing. Well before you could blink we had cut it to a 3-4pt lead and things went back & forth for a while but we still took good shots that started to drop while they took pretty well defended shots that still dropped. Then a Dean Smith thing happened, Nance hit the shot but that last 2 seconds was a master class of execution, Leaky 2 great passes, RJ catches it past mid court so the inbounds pass could be on their side of the court and then the one to Nance that was a perfect set up for that Nance turn around. And how about Hubert, trusting the guy that had a rough shooting night to hit such a big time shot in MSG! When Nance hit that shot, at that very point, knew were were going to win, just in the pit of my stomach I knew, this was going to be our game.

Now I have been critical of Caleb's play a lot this season but yesterday was the Caleb I have been wanting to see, I don't care that he missed shots, he took good shots and especially so for him. I counted in regulation 3 shots from Caleb I didn't love, he hit 1 of them for a huge trey. But folks, 7 assists, Caleb had 7 assists, Caleb is driving and dishing now!!! I did think RJ struggled shooting, he didn't take bad shots but he missed some he usually makes but the kid stepped up strong late second half and was just rock solid in OT, kid played with guts folks. Bacot was a machine in that second half, 10 huge rebounds after half time, Nance 10 rebounds for the game a game where he couldn't hit treys he usually hits, open looks. Not Leaky's best game but he still worked hard, that freshman had a great game and hit some really well defended by Leaky shots but Leaky made him work for it, it was not easy.

How about Hubert pulling Bacot in that first half when he picked up that early 1st foul, good move because it allowed Bacot to finish the game without foul trouble. Putting Trimble in for a decent stretch and as soon as he comes in he is focused on getting the ball to Bacot, seemed to set the tone for getting the ball to Bacot for the rest of the game, Mr 7 assists Caleb darn sure paid attention to that (did I mention how much I love reading Caleb had 7 assists). Thrilling game, mega stage MSG on CBS, is there a larger stage for a regular season game that is not UNC vs duke? Games like this sure do not hurt Hubert's ability to recruit the NYC foot print!

The one thought remains this morning, it sure is nicer to win a nail biter off a miracle last milla second shot that leads to OT than it is to lose one the same way. FANTASTIC GAME AND WIN!!!

Washington absolutely needs to be fast forward into the rotation ASAP!
Big win for the Heels, as I thought the OSU game would be the tougher of the two Big games this week.
Need to put Michigan down early, then focus on winning an ACC Championship.

Whiz, I want to see more of Washington as well but vs OSU was not a great match up for him, to easy to push around right now, you want him to ease in more with a less physical matchup.

Oh, I agree about yesterday. The next 4 games is where Jalen needs to see a consistent uptick in min and production. I want to be 12-4 heading to Charlottesville.

We we're fortunate to get that win, but we've also lost some close ones so I'll assume the basketball gods gave us that one.
However, I was disappointed to hear Leaky in his post-game interview where he said "We know that at the end of the season, when the games really matter, we're gonna show up." In my opinion the games really matter right now ... I hope the rest of the team thinks so too and "shows up" against Michigan! Go Heels !!!

Yeah, not exactly what you want your fifth year senior to be saying.

One thing that has been obvious to me is the lack of a true team leader that pulls everyone along, hypes them up or gets into them when necessary. Think about guys like David Noel, Ray Felton, Kendall Marshall, Joel Berry, Theo Pinson, etc. This team doesn’t have one of those dudes and it’s clear they need one.
