...and not f***ing bad for a "bubble" team from a "weak" conference..

Before I dive in, lemme lead everyone in a big sincere round of applause for St. Peter's. Y'all accomplished something no other team has, and hey, ya beat the evil that is kentucky, so yer ok in my book. With that said, here we go:

- Honestly, I could almost start and stop right here as to the determinant of the outcome --- DEFENSE. Once this run finally comes to an end, I'll get deeper into the nuance, but suffice to say that, what has become a reallly good 20 defensive team, just outdid itself. OUTSTANDING --- moving feet, covering gaps, help and close-outs. It really was the story of the relatively easy victory. And BTW, after our myriad stops, we CLEANED the defensive glass. Mando was a beast despite being noticably gimpy, and Brady was tough as well.

- Speaking of D, my unsung hero for MOP of the Region was Leaky Black. Again, I'll expound more on his metamorphisis later, but there is no overstating just how good he has been. Totally shut down whomever he guarded today, including mustache-boy who'd been lighting it up.

- Being candid, the offensive end was not as comforting. It was OBVIOUS how to make short work of these guys:
!. Push tempo, and 2. Pound them inside.
We did precious few of the former, and when we did the latter, it was easy pickings. BUT, our shot-selection (even in the first half) left MUCH to be desired. In fact, late in the game (almost at the under-4) our defense had held them to 40 points total, and (this is an estimate before rewatching) I'll betcha at least 20 of those resulted from horrible shot-selection on our end leading to easy transition. There was simply no need for quick-triggers or hero-ball today. That sort of thing just keeps a scrappy under-manned opponent in the game.

- On that note, look... I realize Hubert was playing it safe once we got up 20+, but damn, we reverted to BAD habits: Tooo damn much dribbling and late forced shots. And for pete's sake (no pun intended) let's not get into missing FTs... sheesh! That's been a strength for much of the season and needs to continue --- it can determine a team's fate in the FF. I would've also liked to have seen us sub sooner in the second half.

- Back to the good stuff, I applaud Birdy Manek for something many may not have noticed --- keeping his cool. He went down to the floor more than once, and on closer inspection, it was apparent St P was trying to rough him up, presumably to provoke him into another Baylor situation. I applauded you above, Peacocks --- but that was NOT cool.

- Speaking of Manek, boy, he makes some nice baseline cuts. We missed him a couple of times but he cashed in when we found him. And (provided our Guards give em the chance) he and Mando are developing a good feel for each other.

Anyway, from a coach's perspective, being honest, there's a lot of film to teach with this week... but here's the good news: We've reached the point where our execution is the key, i.e., it's more about us than about the opponent. That might not mean anything to some readers, but it was where Dean Smith always wanted to get to with any given team. Hopefully (after a brief and well-deserved celebration) Hubert and staff can get the guys to embrace that mentality. If so?... who knows? As for now, it's time to prep for the FINAL FOUR, bitches!...

Yeah Gary we got a little sloppy but our defense is so much improved…..and Caleb Love’s defense is night and day now. Have you notice how much the commentators are saying “ Good defense by Love” now.

Leaky should be MOP and get his jersey in the rafters too!
Bacot is a beast and I pray he heals up.
Manek is the scariest SOB on the planet!
RJ is a maestro running an offense!
Love is the epitome of death from above!
Hubs is the virtuoso that pulls their orchestra together and produces the most sublime music!

They missed a bunch of gimmes early on. Really demoralized them as we stretched out a lead and maintained it. Had they made some of those open shots at the rim we would have been in for a fight..
Yeah BUT... most of those weren't the gimmes they may have appeared to be. We were almost always in position to defend and challenge, and especially with a height advantage, that alone can put the proverbial fear-o'-God into the shooter. In other words, we conceded almost nothing, and that pays off in the long run.

We played good D and contended a lot of UCLA's shots but those dudes were skilled and made some tough shots early (fortunately it didn't last for them). But St. Peters just doesn't have the same quality of player to make many of those contested shots.

Hats off to SPU. What a remarkable run for the Peacocks. I watched their conference tourney final win over Monmouth a few weeks ago, and thought they were a decent looking team, but never gave them a second thought. Boy was I wrong.

Grover, all kidding aside, I hafta give ya that. Previously, Caleb's D was dependent on, well... Caleb's interest in doing it. He is much improved in that area.

1. We play "20" defense like this again next weekend we are cutting the nets down.

2. HD has done a remarkable job, but there was no reason to not play Styles and McCoy real minutes today. Guarantee we need one of them next weekend.

3. Surprisingly our FT shooting was awful today and as you stated shot selection was head shaking.

4. Major props to Holloway and staff, that run just earned him the Seton Hall gig. It will interesting to see how he does with more talented kids.

This^.

As you said, that interview in which he was flummoxed wasn't about anythng lacking from him --- it was because he knew he had run into a team with not only superior talent, but one that wasn't falling into the trap (at least not too often) of playing his game, not to mention one that was playing lights-out D.

Love has gotten way better with his footwork. Not sure why but it changed! Davis still gets beat a lot but I think he's better on screens now too. And Leaky has gotten even better 1:1.

St. Peter's improbable run was predicted on sticky hard nosed on the ball defense, well we flipped the script on them in that area. What a transformation from our guards from early in the year. Hubert has been that consistent Rock of Gibraltar type to guide that type of growth through some rocky waters.

We protected the rock, unphased by ball pressure. 1 turnover at the half, 6 for the game. RJ fought over almost every pick, we pushed the ballhandlers where we wanted them to go. Total flip from what was done to us early in the year quite often.

It was almost unfair what Leaky did to the mustachioed sharp shooter. Leak had locked down much better, and Adler was helpless trying to evade Leaky's long arm of the law.

Huge size advantage, and we punished them as we should on the glass, with Mando snatching everything in his general vicinity.

Caleb getting that killer instinct gene to show, briming with confidence.

A bit disappointed in the dip in free throw shooting of late, and area we have shined in throughout the year. Hopefully the fellas get back to that level. The charity stripe often can be the difference.

Defense was awesome but they did get some wide open looks at the three point line that could have went in.

Thought we reverted back a little offensively at times. You can still run offense and use the clock. I just hate dribbling up top until there is 10 left on the shot clock. Hope we get back to our groove on offense. Not sure how much was us and how much was the d being played by them.

I agree that in this game and the Baylor game we took the foot off the gas a bit too much. No reason to change up what's been so successful with ~10 minutes remaining. I wouldn't expect that strategy to be too relevant in the Final Four though, but one can hope!

I never thought I would see such a change on D with this team from just a few weeks back. When you see all the other teams that are known as “good D” teams I would say they are also notorious for holding, hand checking up the court, and pushing. I know I’m a homer but our D lately has been legit with out all the extra crap to get the advantage. The clinic Leaky has put on down the stretch I don’t even worry about his offensive game anymore. Shuts down their best player 1-4 on each team. I believe I think I saw porn stache Doug get off two shots in the first half. One a missed three and the other a foul while shooting, I believe Davis was guarding him both times. He had 5 total shots. When Leaky took over I believe he had 3. Two were blocked and I think the other was just a desperate shot to get it over leaky. Aft that he was scared as heel to try one.

Like it was mentioned above the second half with the big lead Davis and Love were taking bad 3s almost like they knew it was out of hand and it didn’t matter and trying to get hot. Drive and facilitate, rinse and repeat. Get that ball moving.

Always thought this team had the tools but not the drive, heart, and passion it took to win. Well it looks like they picked that up in isle 5 on the way to the tourney. Every game in the tourney they have bought in to mission. Only have to do that for 80 more minutes. LFG!!!

Great write up Gary... just wondering about 20 D... is that where the guards funnel the ball handler to a spot where the help is able to close down the play eg. the baseline? I noticed RJ and Caleb both doing this.

Agree 100 % on Leaky... he was phenomenal today and deserved to have the net hanging from his neck in the press conference.

I still don't like how this team slows down play once they've beaten the press.... I'd much prefer they take advantage of the 2-on-1, get the score and go back and defend (last 4min they played like they were up 25 to Baylor!)

Once again, nice summary Gary.

I didn't get back from Philly until late last night and was simply worn out. Our play in both games this past week has shown what a maturing team really looks like. As has been noted, Coach Williams worked to have his teams playing their best going into and during the post-season, and Hubert has accomplished this as well.

While the team as a whole has matured exponentially, I want to single out the 1 player that ignites this teams efforts like no other...., Leaky Black. His defense the past 2 games has been some of the best I have ever witnessed and it reverberates through the entire team and has this team playing some stellar defense. If we can continue to play defense at this level, we have a genuine opportunity to win it all.

As has been mentioned, we had a tendency to revert back to chucking up outside shots for a time against St. Peters. Someone told us who had a TV monitor or computer setting in his lap, ( guy was a real BB junky) that Hubert mentioned this when being interviewed by the Lady sideline reporter and that coincides with what our group saw after that TV TO, as the team changed and went back to driving and hunting both Bacot & Manek.

This St. Peters team was not able to do to the Tar Heels what they had done to
UK, St. Mary's, & Purdue. They certainly tried but were frustrated on both ends of the court. Both their team & their coach came to that stunning realization by the 2nd TV TO and you could very plainly see it in the St. Peters players and coaching staff's demeanor. They knew their gooses were cooked and just did the best they could. There would be no more Cinderella celebrations.

Lots of praises goes out to this team for their play and increased maturity during this tournament, as well as kudos to the coaching staff for their part in it as well, really good job on both fronts.

As for next Saturday...., if we can find our offensive rhythm early and continue to play stalwart defense, we can finally put K in his coffin and shut the mouths of the ever growing bandwagon of K worshipers, who are the most annoying group of individuals I know.

I'm ready for it...., toss the ball up and let's get it on.

I was fortunate to see this game live with my three Carolina brothers and getting to
watch the post game celebration was a thrill.
Everything about this team's ascendancy to the Final Four starts and stops with how
much they have improved defensively.

Watching live demonstrated clearly how effective the Heels have become at fighting through/
switching screens. We just make it so hard for teams to run their offense and get the shots
they want. It needs to continue to be our focus vs dook. Making it harder for them to
score each and every possession can get in their heads; watch what happens on Saturday.

I used "20" in the generic sense for our Man schemes. I'm actually gonna write something in more detail post-tourney about the "21.5" version (as I've dubbed it) that we've seen develop so nicely.
