RAMS CLUB CELEBRATES RECORD-SETTING YEAR

From UNC...

CHAPEL HILL – Rams Club members contributed nearly $62 million in support of Carolina Athletics in 2015-16, a record-level of fundraising for student-athlete scholarships, facilities and other programming.

Members gave $61.8 million in gifts and pledges, the largest amount in any year and an increase of 84 percent from 2014-15. The previous highest total for one year was $51.7 million in 2006-07 as part of the UNC’s Carolina First campaign.

Funding from Rams Club members provides scholarships for more than 450 Tar Heel student-athletes and helps provide facilities and other levels of support for all 28 varsity programs and another 300-plus student-athletes.

“Rams Club members believe in our primary mission to provide academic and athletic opportunities for the best student-athletes to attend Carolina,” says Executive Director John Montgomery. “Through their generous gifts in support of scholarships, facilities and programming, our members provide Carolina Athletics the chance to attract the brightest and most accomplished student-athletes to be a part of this outstanding university. I am proud that our members continue to help us to meet our challenges.”

Donors provided $16.5 million to the scholarship endowment and $13.3 million for the annual fund. Many of the contributions to the endowment fund were deferred gifts. The yield from the endowment fund currently covers approximately 70 percent of the scholarship bill each year, thus the annual fund is critical to make up the difference between the actual cost of scholarships with the amount generated from the endowment.

Rams Club members also provided $17.2 million last year for individual team support and $14.8 million for capital projects.

“It is an extraordinary gift for Rams Club members to provide student-athletes the means to attend a world-class university and compete for championships,” says Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. “Scholarship costs have more than doubled in the last 10 years, in large part due to increases in tuition and changes in NCAA legislation that allow expanded services to improve the overall student-athlete experience. Those challenges will only get more daunting over the next decade. Our students, coaches and staff thank the thousands of Rams Club members for their continued support and generosity.”

“A robust scholarship program allows us to continue the success of our broad-based program,” says Lowry Caudill, chair of the Rams Club’s executive board of directors. “We enjoy the role athletics plays in providing our student-athletes with lessons that will last them the rest of their lives.”

The Rams Club, known formally as The Educational Foundation, Inc., was chartered in 1938. It has provided scholarships to approximately 7,000 student-athletes. For more information, please visit RamsClub.com.
