Not to get ahead of ourselves (there's still a TON of work left to do for the 2016 class), but I came across a tidbit of knowledge that piqued my interest so I thought I would share.
The NCAA changed a rule beginning with the class of 2014 that allowed prospects to take official visits beginning after January 1st of their junior year in high school. Before this new change, players could not take any officials during their junior year. The first class to be affected by this was the 2014 class (Berry, Pinson and Jackson).
Granted it's been a small sample size, but the UNC staff has had great success with kids they can get on campus for an OV as early as possible under this new rule.
Three examples:
1) Joel Berry - OV on January 19th, commitment to UNC on January 21st.
2) Justin Jackson - OV on March 2nd, commitment to UNC on March 4th.
3) Tony Bradley - OV on March 7th, commitment to UNC September 2nd.
All 3 OV's took place during the junior year of the 3 players listed.
*While Pinson never took an OV to UNC, he had been making unofficial visits as early as 2011.
So for me, I'll be watching to see if Roy can manage to get any 2017 kids to take an OV during their junior year as opposed to waiting late. As we've recently seen with Bradley, getting that relationship established early can pay dividends.
