Growing up as a child in the late 1950s -early 1960s, my dad being an avid golfer and the beginning of golf tournaments being broadcast on TV, it was a Sunday afternoon ritual at our house to watch it wherever they were playing that week. The head to battles that Palmer had with Nicklaus were epic and of course from my point of view Nicklaus was the bad guy. But it was the golden age of professional golf as its popularity grew and it didn't lack for unique characters that stick in my memory - Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez, the pioneering Charlie Sifford and others. Then there was Arnie's Army, his loyal followers who came to the tournaments only to see him play by following him and his group around every hole. They would cheer his every swing and putt whether good or bad. My dad used to jokingly say that Arnold could stand on the green and fart and his army would let out a cheer.
RIP to a great man!
