I am fine with Roy staying though I am quite displeased with the job he's done the last few years (I am aware of the trying two years its been for him) - it's not personal, it's business. But he's been a jerk all year to media and fans. He recruits harder than anyone but may need to recruit smarter. UNC is still seen as a glory program but has lost much of its sheen to many recruits. It's a different day than when Dean did his thing in his way. Back then a kid would consider it a high honor to receive a scholly offer from UNC but not now. While still prestigious, there seems to be a commonality between them and many other teams. Their offers don't stand out as much. Why? That is the million dollar question. Roy's won two National titles since he's been here in much faster time than Dean. But the game has changed and Roy needs to change with it. Whatever change is required he needs to discover it pronto and implement it into his coaching, recruiting, and program management. I hope he stays. I also hope he changes, and that means being a little more classy when handling media and fans (why he needs to berate or make foolish guys/gals that make 1% of what he makes is from insecurity or ridiculous pride. either way, his press conferences have worn me out). It also means if Dean is his guiding basketball light, he must ask himself if Dean would adapt to the times? I think the easy and true answer to that is a resounding, "yes!" Dean was always known for innovation. He saw what others did not see, designed tactics and plays that would take advantage of rules, scenarios, the opposition, culture, and environment. Roy says he has spent his coaching life trying to live up to Dean. At this time of his life as a coach, perhaps it is time he did that in the most respectful, honoring way would be to become his own man, take what he's learned from Dean and the game, and innovate, grow, and evolve within himself. Mark Twain said a man never really became a man until his father died. This carries a lot of truth. It is now Roy's time to become the basketball coach he was created to be. If the previous 25+ years are portending, then Roy should finish his career as the coach of UNC with even greater glory.
