Don't blame him. As I've said before, with no NCAA cloud hanging, I highly doubt he takes all 3 of those guys.
I really wish Tony Bradley decided to come back. The Heels could definitely use him this year, and it would have given him another season to develop his game. I just don't think he was ready for the NBA.
Right. You said it, he normally would've probably just taken Brooks, and only taken the other two in year where we had plenty of studs ahead of them. Quite unusual for him to take three sub 100 ranked bigs In one class. But his hand was kind of forced. Also, yes he took Joel James but he was also rated in the top 70 in his class and actually was considered to have pro potential eventually. This class would be like taking 2 Desmond Hubert types, I think Brooks was slightly underrated but still the point stands.

Hey, nothing we didn't already know. Roy likes to sandbag as well as give motivating jabs to certain guys in these pressers.
Sounds like nothing more than a little wake-up call to Jalek (which those of us who have followed his development knew was inevitably coming), and a challenge to the Big pups to bust ass and impress him if they want to play.
In other words, Roy being Roy.
Probably not and honestly, no one close to the program expected him to. Jalek has the ability to be a monster, but the culture shock of having to bust ass on D and not totally rely on his gifts was inevitable.
The good news is we don't NEED him to start --- had JB left it would be a different story obviously, but since he didn't Jalek has the luxury of working into the rotation. He's already our second-best PG. He needs to learn the system, play under control, and most vitally, D-up strong.
And we all know just because of the family and history ol Roy is gonna ride him harder than most. Higher expectations.
Roy was very candid today about the big uns yeah they have a LOT of work and growth to do..there is no Kennedy, no Isaiah, NO JJ.....
I just think we should all lower our expectations and just sit back and enjoy this season. ALL the pressure is on DOOk ya know the team that cannot possibly LOSE a game

I really like what Roy said about Jalek. Roy always rides guys with high ceilings like he did with Brice. It means that Roy sees massive potential in Jalek and he's to push and prod it out of him.
Definitely true, and definitely a luxury. But our best lineup should be Berry-Felton-Pinson-Johnson-Maye, and for that lineup to work, every player has to be absolutely committed to defense (because Brice isn't back there to clean up mistakes).
It also means coach gives a damn about Jalek and his future here or in the NBA.
I for one will enjoy seeing each game..."block out!-grab it, 2 hands"..good shot"..I will enjoy each possession(before conf.)...good stress..this is cake now that the program is free
Just listened to Roy's entire press conference. I definitely agree with what a lot of you are saying about Jalek. Roy sees the incredible gifts this kid has, and is making these comments to motivate him to help him reach his full potential. We've all seen this before. Over time, Marcus got better, Justin Jackson got better, Brice was much improved. Hopefully Jalek can follow that same path as well.
You guys that are a little more plugged in...do you think Jalek takes Roy calling him out personal? Or responds negatively to his comments? It seems like I remember Brice saying he wanted to transfer because of Roy calling him out so much. Jalek being on the 2nd string as a 5 star recruit, then being called out just seems like it could be negative. I know Roy knows what he is doing but I also know the whole mentality of that generation is different. Just interested to hear what you guys think
JF of all people knows what he is getting into, you can bet his fam has already told him, and I’m pretty sure he will grow and be better because of it. JF is a legacy, I’m not saying he would have come to unc reguardless, but...... JF is gonna be special, wether we have him for one year or two(don’t see him lasting much longer, and believe it or not the only way he isn’t oad is probably if we repeat.) now this is jmho.
I bet Ray Ray is in his ear also.....this kid knew exactly what he was getting into.....if Roy is not doing this to him then he would be worried!!!
I laughed out loud when I heard him say this; however, this can't help the ole' self confidence level of each guy. Roy has a tendency to be brutally honest.
Well, anyone who was pumping up these guys saying they were diamonds in the rough and were way underranked will hopefully have their expectations well lowered. The positive side is that theres clearly room for growth and the hope of being nicely surprised by any production we do get from them this year.
Roy was laughing about his own remark, sure he was kidding in part and being honest in part. One or two of the frosh bigs will need to step up and be a player. That means a great deal of hard work until October 27, 2017 and we'll see who is ready against Barton.
This is nothing we haven't heard before. There was an entire thread(s) about Jalek having a poor work ethic during the summer. And I can't count on two hands the amount of times we've heard worries re: our freshman bigs.

true. However Brice and Kennedy were similar to Jalek in that Roy used to critique their motivation and work ethics. A bit different in my opinion that hes being so blunt about the talent level of these guys. Im not surprised personally. Hoping they develop nicely.
If we're being brutally honest, Roy likely only takes one of these guys in a normal recruiting year. However, under the circumstances with how recruiting has gone the last couple years under the NCAA cloud, he didn't have much choice.
OK, so here is the thing with Jalek his mindset is more along Ty Lawson than his uncle Ray, Jalek kinda is a bit on the hard headed side, kinda does feel that the game is more about the offensive end than the other end of the court, saying this nicely guys. He has been talked to about this, talked to a lot by his uncle, by his family that love Roy. He has been told to expect Roy to get on his butt and stay on it and that if he expects to get the kind of playing time he wants that he will have to work just as hard on the defensive end as he does on offense. But telling him and his having to experience it is 2 very different things just as it was with Ty.
If I am being honest, I know it flies in the face of what most think but I really do not expect Jalek to be one and done, I do think he expects the be able to be. But the kid is not as ready as he thinks he is, spending the season playing behind and beside Joel Berry, absolute gold for that kid because Joel will show him what it takes and Joel will also get on his butt. Jalek will need a swift kick in the butt from time to time and he will as well be the cause of a few bouts of vertigo with Roy but Jalek needs that, Ty needed that, Ty realized the value of it and Jalek will as well. Jalek will not play for any other college coach other than Roy.
I do agree Dav but don't forget that iron sharpens iron and I do believe that Jalek will push Joel in some areas, which is not bad.

I hope you're right about Jalek staying long term. He definitely has talent, but can become ever better if he buys in to what Roy and his teammates teach him. Having Joel as a mentor will definitely be a tremendous asset for his development. Joel will tell him exactly what it takes to become a champion.
My expectations will stay firmly high! I know at least 2 of our bigs AND JF will be significant contributors this year. I watched too and it seemed obvious to me that Roy was messing the media, while motivating his players and taking pressure off them. He will ride them hard, take all blame, and downplay their talents all year until they play like their hair is on fire; then he will drop the "I knew you could be great" bombshell on them!
I will enjoy this fun ride and still expect us to do well in the tourney. If we don't get to the FF, I will not be disappointed since I am playing with house money!

I feel Garrison will be capable of putting up those kind of numbers. Like Isaiah, he will be our 3rd or 4th scoring option behind Joel, Luke, Theo, and probably Cam. But because he will most likely be a starter from day one and play close to 20 MPG, I think he can deliver similar numbers as a frosh. And I think he needs to for us to be successful.

I generally agree with most of your posts and this one is spot on IMO. Brooks, Huffman, and Felton will all three make significant contributions this year.
And Roy is a master at motivating his players, some require praise and some require the tough love treatment. Some will be fast tracked out of necessity(Brooks), some due to sheer talent(Felton), and some will be brought along at a slower pace(Manley and Miller). But rest assured that he will maximize their efforts and abilities. Of that, I have no doubt.
Based on rank, Way bigs ranked where these 4 are on Roys past teams- history shows if one of the 4 pans out to be an ACC level starter things will have gone relatively well. Walker Miller will never play meaningful minutes at Unc in my opinion, Im not really sure why hes even really being discussed, besides perhaps sentimental reasons. I agree its going to most likely be Brooks who is that guy, with Huffman being a solid contributor back up eventually.
Although saying a freshman Brooks will match a junior Hicks' numbers is a tad optimistic for my taste, I hope it happens.
