Roy Williams not only used his weekly press conference Friday at the Smith Center to criticize the ACC’s scheduling but he also had some words for ESPN regarding their current “Green Room Guys” promotion.
The Green Room is where high NBA draft picks wait on draft night until their names are selected. It’s a promotion focusing on who will be the highest picks in the draft this summer. Williams doesn’t like it one bit.
“I don’t think I have to be perfect friends with TV, either. ESPN’s our partner, and I’ve got to watch on TV where in some college basketball games and they’re talking about the fricken green room, that’s one of the most ridiculous things – that’s one of my partners? That’s half the damn broadcast.
“’So and so’s in the green room.’ This is a great time for me to be saying something about it because they ain’t mentioning any of my guys. But God almighty, you’re sitting there trying to win championships and here it is January and ESPN is talking about some green room and some Chad Ford or whoever he is – that’s the most ridiculous thing we have to put up with in college basketball.
“TV drives everything, and again, all those other guys, get them, take them, go, they’re not talking about any of my guys. That’s why I’m comfortable saying something about it. I mean, seriously, we’re trying to win conference championships and we’re saying college basketball means something and here ESPN, one of our partners, and the only channel that works on my television, and I’m thinking Gold almighty, I’m watching games last night, green room?
“Damn, I was looking around and saw Michigan State wearing some ugly green uniforms the other day and I thought Tom (Izzo) had a great deal of power, he’s got a whole green room and then I realized they’re talking about college players and the pro draft. That’s the mist ridiculous fricken thing I’ve ever seen, and put it in capital letters and send it to ESPN. And tell them if they want me to tell them privately what the crap I think I’ll do that, too.”
