You goofy old man, I love you. People (including myself) will always have their criticisms for some of your in game decisions, but I will never question your character or your qualities as a man. You can look all the way across the country and you'll never find a more genuine coach who loves his players and loves his school as much as he does. Even though last night wasnt the result we hoped for, it proved to me how lucky we are to have you and I wouldnt trade you for anyone.

And I dont think for a damn second that you've coached your last title game or hoisted your last trophy. You'll be back, I have no reason to think otherwise.

I love Roy..only thing I don't like is he doesn't step up for his players during the game when calls are one sided...when is the last time he got a technical to get the refs attention?..so many daggumits ain't gonna draw but so much attention!!

Can you imagine what K-Rat's actions if Duke would has lost a game like that? K would walked right out of the tunnel and taken a cab back to the hotel. Roy is nothing but class.

Roy is class. He is the face of the best basketball program in America and we are blessed to have him.

Now, when the NCAA gets out of town our recruiting will pick back up. We will be back. It may take a few years depending on who leaves and who stays, but next year will be a fun year. I hope next year's team can overachieve and do some great things.

To even mention Marcus and that little turd PUNKSON whiplash in the same sentence is ridiculous.
One is a first class All American kid, the other is the dirtiest punk in all of basketball. I hope the jerk DOES get drafted and gets his just deserves in the NBA when he tries his BS on the MEN there

He will be back.....but I think he has the good sense not to zero in on a retirement date. You remember all the de-commits Spurrier had?

Roy often frustrates, but he is the guy in my opinion. Everyone should be indebted to the man as it was his touch that brought the program back from the depths. Has given two national championships, and almost a third. But in all honesty, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he pulled a Dean and walked just before the season next year. Roy really aged this year. For the first time he often looked old, and tired. He has been through a lot. The NCAA deal that he has had hanging over his head, and having to deal with those non-stop questions for years. And his health. Two bad knees and the vertigo issues that seem to get worse. And on the personal side he has lost a lot of folks close to him. Dean, Gut, and a couple of other close friends. I surely hope he doesnt, because I have no idea where we could effectively go. But one couldn't blame him if he did decide to call it a career. I want to think that he loves it so much that he couldn't live without it unless he was just physically unable to do the job. But I thought the same thing about Dean.

Next year's team will be Top Five (imo)...

Not a doubt that Roy Williams will be back! BTW, he looked great at the end of this season. His bad knee will be soon fixed. He is younger than "K"ay. He simply does not use shoe polish.

How long?..Will Roy be the coach..he's 65 with bad knees and vertigo as we speak!!

Roy's tenure as our coach, it maybe was a little shorter until the media began hammerring him on this question this whole tourney season. I have a feeling that all those questions of how much longer aimed at Roy may have pissed him off to the point that he now will come back with something to prove and the media and their questions may have added 5yrs or so to the time Roy will have to prove it.

One thing about Roy as a coach, before coming back to UNC Roy's rep was he was a great recruiter but not a great game coach, his teams lost the big one when they should not have. Since being back at UNC, I am not sure I would call Roy hall of famer successful as a recruiter, Kal and K and to a lesser extent Bill Self seem to have taken that title. But what I have seen in Roy and his staff is great player development, he doesn't get the greatest talent in the top 10 but he develops the players he does get in to great players.

Brice came to UNC, the national media didn't consider that a big deal, Marcus was not considered a great player, Hicks was a Micky D guy but face it, he was no JUlius Randle, he was no Jabari or Ochafor, he was no Brandan Ingram. When he got to UNC, many UNC Fans may have felt, ut oh, how did this kid ever make a Micky D roster? Hansbourgh, Henson, Zeller, on & on were well respected but face it, not one of them since Roy has been back was considered a future NBA star out side of maybe barnes, marvin, and BWright and none of those fellas were locks to even start. We have had 2 one & done players since Roy has been back and 1 guys that left after a soph season. Point is other programs have had more talent but Roy has developed talent that he had and that takes coaching that is much more than the label great recruiter.

Roy runs a clean program, his players may get in to trouble at times but Roy nor his staff engage in the dirty tricks that happen so often in the game these days. Roy and his staff develop the talent they get and they still get solid talent even with this NCAA cloud that has been over us for 4 long draining years. Just think of what this will do for us when this cloud finally does pass, this entire experience could end up making us even stronger than before and give us a re-newed enthusiam for something we love anyway, UNC basketball!

He doesn't need a T to protest and HE DOES, you just miss it. He has been warned often.

Mikey, I just got verification of something I suspected. Roy and the staff were none too pleased when they found out who was assigned to ref the title game, in particular, Stephens. Publicly of course the most they will ever say is that they have "not done well" or have "had issues" with him....privately they believe he has an agenda and a chip on his shoulder vis a vis Carolina.

Unfortunately, as we saw, all that trepidation came to fruition in spades Monday night. Also, some of the players thought they were all but being baited for a Technical at times. One poster here noticed that with Kennedy after that gawdawful foul call on the loose ball in the second half, and he would be correct. Again, as I understand it our players were wary that he might T them up (whether from pre-warnings from our staff or from the vibe they were getting on the floor, that I don't know)... and that's no way to have to play a championship game.

Roy will coach until health says otherwise.Hell,he plays golf on those bum knees and we all know how much he loves golf.

I was fortunate to sit down and talk with Roy a few years ago and found him to be the most humble, honest, and a great representative of our University. You can disagree with any calls he makes but you cannot challenge the integrity of the man and what he gives for his players. I am so proud to have Coach on that bench. Next year may be a challenge with those that will not be on the team but one thing you can count on is Roy's dedication to the program and more importantly to his boys.

I have friends who have played golf with him and they have said the same thing about him.

Roy Williams was flat out out coached in the Championship game by Jay Wright.

The Heels had much better talent than Villanova but Roy lacked the ability to adjust the Wright's game [lan. UNC should have won the game.

You know what they say...Opinions are like A-Holes,everybody has one.

As bugs would say, what a maroon!

Other than FG%, UNC got the better of Villanova. I guess it was Roy's fault that our players missed so many point blank shots.

Nova was RED HOT in the final 4, ran everybody out of the gym .......................... BUT US! Decent from 2 and we win.

Their BEST 3pt shooter shot 36% for the season, go figure.

Watch a bit more closely. Anytime Roy has a call or in game situation he would like to address he reads them out going up and down the sideline. Not in a Gary Williams sense but in Roy's own way, get his point across without all the ugly stuff.

Guess Bobol didn't watch the game as he did not mention the 8 calls in a row against the Heels...Jay game planned that huh? Good grief.

You could REALLY see this first hand on the Meeks "foul" on the floor, when he dove on the ball, barely made contact, and the official was all over Meeks like he just committed a flagrant 2. Meeks looks up and maybe said something, and the official gets all red and lathered, ready to T up KM. No warning, no sense of the game, etc. I knew then we were in trouble.

Earlier Justin gets cheap shotted by a Nova player, they lightly interact, and the official pulls Justin by the jersey, and warns about a T for Justin and maybe for Roy? How do kids from that point on not have it in their heads that they basically have to play meekly and softly the rest of the night.

This is not even bringing up the times under the hoop where Marcus and Hicks got mauled with no calls. Again, how does that not creep into your head? Because that same stuff and way less was whistled on the other end. Pathetic

Coaches should have veto power over at least 1 of the 3 officials in an important game.

Yeah when I commented that Meeks and Johnson were very frustrated with the calls another UNC poster asked me "how did I know , did I ask them"?

Heard it from two reliable sources (one was a player).
It's funny (but not), before the game they showed Roy with an uncharacteristically sour look on his face during warm-ups. I (half) joked to my buddies that it was prolly because he knew Stephens was the head ref. Turns out maybe it really was ...

Funny you should say that, 58. I was about to post some thoughts on the subject and that was one of them.
It's done in HS football , not sure about basketball cause I never called it. Hell some guys got a steady diet of academy 8 man because of it.

My next to last season of full-time HS coaching before I went back to grad school, the league we were in (as many) didn't have any specific governing body for officials, they were just hired and assigned by a couple of folks in the league office. Qualifications were, shall we say. sketchy... and some of it was so damned bad that it became simultaneously a running joke and point of much angst among the coaches. Hell, this one crew was so incompetent the opposing coach and I started doing a stand-up comedy routine back and forth over who was getting the worse calls --- gotta say we had the first few rows of the stands laughing pretty hard :D

Anyway, with the conference tourney coming up (and having been screwed royally by a couple of zebras with agendas, as we all have), the girls coach and I came up with an idea. We got a conference call up with several coaches and the head of the conference and I suggested that for the tournament each coach would submit the names of 3 or 4 refs whom they considered competent and/or fair, and that would be the pool for the tourney. Then each coach after seeing the list could have 2 preemptive strikes (sorta like a lawyer striking jurors) meaning those zebras could not ref one of your games (and of course they weren't told they were being bumped, the assignments for each game were simply handed out after the strikes were handed in). Damned if it didn't work like a charm. Best officiating we'd seen all season (and it weeded out certain coaches' cousin Buford or whoever). The dumb thing is the incoming conference director wouldn't go for it the next regular season (one of his damned relatives musta gotten bumped ;))

Seriously, even though you have separate entities for officials in college, there is no reason why coaches' strikes should not be used. Refs at the end of the day are human, and humans --- even the ones who are competent at something --- sometimes don't behave well, and sometimes have agendas. Trust me when I tell you, coaches figure that out pretty fast. Anonymous preemptive strikes would go a long way in eliminating some of that.
