I'm trying to branch out from the common story lines and I'm doing some digging for some under the radar, off the beaten path news items. Some of this is from sources. Some of this is from the Rivals.com network.
UNC will have perhaps its biggest junior day on March 7. Of course, it will coincide with the UNC-Duke basketball game, and that's a big draw for recruits in the region and even beyond. Free tickets to that will get a kid on campus, and UNC's the kind of school that can make an unexpected splash when a kid visits for the first time, especially in an environment like that and with this staff's energy.
Jordon Brown is thought to be a UNC lean by a source I spoke with. The four-star running back has visited UNC several times. Conversely, as has been reported a few times, Clemson is the main competition for Diondre Overton. The Heels have some structural advantages there, namely the fact that Overton's a long-time UNC fan.
Tre Harbison said UVA and Vandy are "a notch above" in this Feb. 17 story.
UNC will continue to recruit Clemson commit Tavien Feaster, however unlikely it is to flip a Palmetto State kid who pledged early to the Tigers. Carolina loves him.
Last I heard West Virginia might be the biggest competition for Kennedy McKoy.
How about some news on receiver targets other than Overton? GamecockCentral.com's last update has Bryan Edwards saying South Carolina's "number one by far." GC is now saying Larry Collins, another top S.C. receiver, no longer favors USC and Florida State. He visited UNC recently and the Heels would probably be top five or so, a source tells me. North Carolina and LSU are considered the early favorites for Kevin Stepherson, at least out of the schools that have offered. Per Rob Cassidy, four-star receiver Freddie Swain favors Tennessee but UNC is one of the schools he'll visit this spring.
Garrett Walston is the tight end UNC has the best chance with. Naseir Upshur would have UNC in his top five or six, I believe, and he's the "we'll take him anytime" guy.
Offensive line notes: Luke Elder likes UNC a lot. Josh Ball has visited several times and UNC would be on the short list. Jay Jay McCargo is visiting this spring. Pete Leota has only visited once but he should be up this spring. Landon Dickerson favors Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. Probably ends up out of state. Connor McGovern favors UNC and Penn State.
UNC DB commit Javontay Smith visits early next month, as we said on the podcast; important because of recent LSU offer -- 'DB U' as recruits know them.
Zack Gilbert, in-state DE dealing with injury, will visit this spring.
