SG Jonathan Powell (West Virginia) commits to UNC

He started every game since mid-December and once starting averaged mid-30 mpg.

Seems unlikely he'd transfer here to come off the bench.

So . . . is this a sign Drake is leaving? Or is he going to get starter minutes at both wings?

Also interesting that he didn't follow DeVries to Indiana. I wonder why not? Indiana is closer to his listed home (Dayton, OH) than NC, so that probably isn't it.

If he was guaranteed a starting spot, we'd be in big trouble. Can't imagine that's the case, so yeah probably it's as a bench player.

Only scored 11 points per 40 minutes, and didn't do much well besides shoot threes. Looks like he has good size/strength and could be a good rotation option. I would expect him to be a rotation forward next year.

West Virginia's coach left to take the Indiana job and the WVU program is in total disarray.

Highly, highly unlikely he'll be starting at UNC next season.

Looks like a nice replacement for Jackson if he leaves. Didn't watch enough Videos to say starter or come of bench, but watched enough to know that the young man can shoot.

Out of Jackson/Powell, I hoped one would stay, and with this kid coming in I think he can replace Jackson who I feel will declare for draft.

Seth
Powell
Powell
Wilson
TBD----

I can begin to respect us, I would think same results win and loss wise however. A lot more work to be done. Bring on the Bigs please!

I know we will get a PG from portal, but after that no more guards please. We have 2 freshmen, I expect one if not both to see floor for some real action as freshmen.

Well, we’d better bring in a lot more because Wilson was very underwhelming in the McDonald’s AA game last night. Only player on his team with a negative +/- grade. Zero points. I know it’s the McD’s game but I don’t see this guy putting up big scoring numbers next year. He needs a lot of help.

Archer, I agree help is needed, I by no means think Wilson will lead us. I am rolling with Seth Trimble next year. Last summer he just took crazy leap in his game. No fault of RJ, but he takes away from Seth game. EC talked mid range, we'll Seth got a mid range IMHO. I expect Seth to be ALL-ACC, and I'm approaching most of my post this summer in anticipation of of big year from him.

Let's get some stiff big men cause they are out there, and a veteran PG, because many believe Seth can't play PG, and obviously our freshmen PGs are not starter ready.

We're hosting Veesaar today, whom Sam Vecinie calls the best big in the portal.
That's good news.

I saw this on On3 - Veesaar talking about Caleb Love

“If anybody ever thinks he’s not a good teammate, it’s not true. He’s the best teammate we had,” the Arizona big-man explained. “He’s one of the better persons I’ve ever met. He’s pushed me so much over the last two years, I’m so grateful for him.
“In the tournament, I was struggling, he talked to me. He came up to me after I missed the free throw because we had been — he made me practice free throws after that game. After that he just came up to me, hey, we worked way too hard, you got this. After that I didn’t miss a free throw, I made seven in a row.
“I just want to set the record straight. For any scouts or anybody who thinks he’s not a good teammate, he’s the best person. Everybody loves him on the team. There’s no problems with him. The best person we have.”
Then again, do we really want a guy who uses too many vowels in his name?

Dixon may surprise you. I will not be surprised if Dixon can run our team from the jump.

Wilson is a guy that isn't likely to shine in an all star game format, he does more of the blue collar stuff that doesn't pop on the stat sheets. He is not a guy that is going to camp out in the deep corner and wait for the ball to maybe show up, he is movement. I expect his defense to lead his offense initially as he adjusts to his team mates but the ball handling and passing for a 6'9"{ kid will show up a little before his jump shooting).

Jonathan Powell is insurance if Drake enters and stays in the draft and if Drake stays JPowell is a really nice bench piece that brings defense and 3pt shooting, solid defender BTW. I am expecting maybe 3 more commits by the weekend, all area of need guys and very likely 2 starters.

Seth, my concern for Seth at the point isn't as much he does not have the ability but more that he has spent now 3 seasons with us and not been allowed to develop as a PG. Can he handle it as a back up point with the rest of his minutes coming at the 2, I think so, I am a bit concerned with his ball handles when teams press us. But don't forget, we have 2 6'4" freshmen on the way and both could help at the point in a pinch. I am a little higher on Dixon than Denis right now simply because Denis was hurt for a good part of last season so I saw more of Dixon. Dixon is just a smooth operator, (who did that song LOL) and Denis is more Ian Jackson electric, I think Tar Heel fans are going to love Dixon's shooting stroke, I see Danny Green in that kid's jump shot.

Maybe because IU only has 3 players right now. Devries, PG from the portal and an incoming Freshman SG/SF. They literally had no one in the roster!

Pretty traditional 3-and-D guy to me. I don't think he's a layered offensive player right now. Very much a catch-and-shoot player.

This staff has been quite hit or miss with these kinds of players. Cade Tyson and Paxson Wojcik were really bad. Cormac Ryan was a starter level 2-way player.

The good thing IMO is he's coming from a big conference. That doesn't always matter. But it could. And Hubert hasn't had much success trying to get guys to jump a level in competition.

As of now, I prefer him being a reserve. Would like every starter, especially at the 1-3 to be able to create more offense.

I see a focus on length and athleticism maybe. Will watch how they fill out the portal commits, but seems like that may be a goal.
