That's disgraceful. I hope they catch the bastards and make them clean it all off with a toothbrush.
Class 1 misdemeanor in North Carolina, if the Interwebz are to be believed. Hope they hit 'em as hard as possible, but I doubt the perps are ever caught. Maybe we'll get lucky and they were dumb enough to record themselves committing the crime, with the video forthcoming at a later date.
We are so ****ed up as a country. Like it or not, the Civil War effing happened -- regardless of how bad people want to erase it from the history books now. Don't want to support the cause that *some* fought for in that war? By all means. But don't desecrate a memorial to people who lost their lives.
Do Confederate soldiers' lives and legacy not matter....? Those men (and boys) had wives, daughters, mothers, fathers. They bled and hurt and died just like Union soldiers. Some of these soldiers were Tar Heels who walked the same campus we walked and lived in some of the same buildings we lived in. They also called the same towns and counties home that we call home. The reasons may not have been just or true , but rightly or wrongly, North Carolinians fought and died for what they deemed best for this state at that time. And that should be admired, IMO.
The most f***ed up part is most people will see this story and said "Good!" or "ah, who cares?" Pisses me off. I don't want any of the hypocrites 'condoning' or looking the other way on this to ever get upset again about Moo fans or Duke fans vandalizing campus landmarks. UNC's campus is sacred and anyone who desecrates ANY part of the campus can KMA and do the world a favor and move to a different state.

This is just angry people lashing out. If it weren't the civil war, it would be something else.
I know you were being sarcastic and I won't say it's his fault. But he's the tone setter for racial discussions. And he has failed miserably to create the appropriate environment. Or maybe he wants this racial tension, in which case he's succeeded.
I've heard this argument here before, and it's pretty hard to disagree. Race relations need to be addressed OUTSIDE of events involving police brutality and racially-motivated murders. It's impossible to have reasonable discussions in those situations. All it does is polarize people.

Didn't the school rename Saunders Hall because of his racist associations? Then some idiot decides to vandalize a hundred-year-old statue? I hate to have to break it to people who are black and white... The Civil War happened. There's no changing that. The monuments to men that died fighting in it are in no way an affront to African Americans. I abhor the idea of Slavery. I have more shame for the Founders who didn't outlaw it in the beginning. The US Flag flew over a slave nation for 80 years and a segregated nation for at least 80 more. Will they deface the Iwo Jima statue since it doesn't have any black men in the group? It was, after all, a mandated, segregated army back then. Dwelling negatively in your past is not helping your future.
Its much more likely to be a person from Rainbow Confederacy (Marxists, homosexuals, OWS, Panthers, La Raza etc). Like the shooter (Roof) said in his writings, the supremacist groups are mostly talkers online who don't actually do anything.
